What the WD-1 Does

The TrolMaster WD-1 is a water-presence sensor purpose-built for the Aqua-X and Hydro-X irrigation control ecosystems. It operates in two distinct modes depending on placement and configuration. In passive mode, the detector sits on the floor or any leak-prone surface and fires an alert the moment it makes contact with water — flagging a line burst, overflow, or fitting failure before the damage compounds. In active verification mode, the sensor is assigned to a specific irrigation output (solenoid valve or pump), placed where runoff or delivery water should appear, and is tasked with confirming that each scheduled watering event actually delivers water within a user-adjustable delay window. If the event fires but no water reaches the sensor, the controller sends an 'irrigation failure' alert to the operator's smartphone via the TrolMaster app.

Who This Sensor Is Built For

Any licensed cannabis or hemp facility running TrolMaster's Aqua-X or Hydro-X controllers and relying on automated irrigation schedules across multiple zones should have WD-1 units deployed. Multi-site MSOs with remote facilities are the clearest use case: an irrigation pump that silently fails overnight can mean a room of plants goes without water for 12+ hours before anyone notices at lights-on. With the WD-1 assigned to that pump output, the failure alert hits the grower's phone within minutes of the missed event. Coco-coir, rockwool, and recirculating DWC/NFT operations are all common deployments. Facilities running fertigation dosers or Dosatron-fed manifolds benefit equally — the WD-1 confirms liquid is actually moving through the line, not just that the pump received a signal.

Key Features and Integration

The WD-1 connects to the Aqua-X or Hydro-X controller via RJ12 cable — a 16 ft cable and T-splitter are included in the box, so daisy-chaining into an existing sensor bus is straightforward. An addressing button on the unit lets the controller auto-assign a unique address in sequence, eliminating manual DIP-switch configuration. The onboard LCD shows current status at a glance without needing to pull up the app. Each individual irrigation output on the controller — solenoid or pump — can be assigned to its own dedicated WD-1, meaning a multi-zone facility can monitor every zone independently. Up to 25 WD-1 sensors can be connected to a single Aqua-X or Hydro-X controller.

The WD-1 also supports the Auto-Fill function on the Aqua-X Pro when two detectors are used together: one positioned at the low-water mark of a reservoir and one at the full mark. When the level drops below the lower sensor, the Aqua-X Pro triggers the fill solenoid or pump and stops when the upper sensor is reached — a closed-loop reservoir management function with no float valves required.

One important compatibility note from TrolMaster: the WD sensors are rated to detect municipal water, well water, and nutrient-infused water. Reverse osmosis (RO) water with very low dissolved solids content may not trigger detection reliably, so position sensors downstream of nutrient injection points in RO-fed systems.

How It Fits a Commercial Build

In a multi-room commercial facility, a single Aqua-X controller handles up to 30 irrigation outputs; a full complement of 25 WD-1 sensors gives near-complete zone-by-zone verification at scale. For a typical 10-zone veg room and 20-zone flower room running off two controllers, pairing each zone output with a dedicated WD-1 means every automated feed cycle is verified — not assumed. That confirmation layer is increasingly relevant for facilities maintaining compliance documentation and SOP consistency across multiple licensed rooms.

The sensor's compact footprint (160 mm L × 86 mm W × 86 mm H packaged) and RJ12 daisy-chain architecture mean retrofitting into an existing Aqua-X or Hydro-X installation adds minimal labor. No additional wiring runs or relay panels required — the sensor bus already in place handles the additional nodes.
