The TrolMaster WCS-1 is a three-prong volumetric water content sensor designed specifically for the TrolMaster Aqua-X irrigation control system. The three-prong probe inserts directly into your growing medium — coco coir, rockwool slabs, or soil — and continuously measures the percentage of water and nutrients present in that substrate. Readings are displayed in real time on the sensor's own LCD module, on the Aqua-X controller screen, and through the TrolMaster smartphone app.
Each WCS-1 set ships complete with the three-prong probe, a transfer module (the display screen and addressing button), one RJ12 T-splitter, and a 16 ft RJ12 cable — everything required to connect the sensor into an existing Aqua-X network without additional cable purchases.
The WCS-1 is built for licensed cannabis and hemp operators running coco coir, rockwool, or soil production systems who want to move from fixed-timer irrigation to substrate-condition-triggered watering. The WCS-1 is the entry point into TrolMaster's substrate monitoring ecosystem. Operations already running an Aqua-X (NFS-1) controller can add up to eight WCS-1 sensors per unit, covering multiple zones, tables, or strains simultaneously. When multiple sensors are connected to a single Aqua-X, the controller and app display the average VWC across all connected sensors — a practical check against localized wet or dry pockets skewing irrigation decisions.
Real-time display: Substrate VWC percentage is shown live on the sensor module's LCD, on the Aqua-X controller, and in the TrolMaster app — no polling required, no manual readings to log.
App graphing and dry-back visualization: Historical VWC data plots as a graph in the app, allowing cultivation staff to review actual dry-back curves, compare them against target profiles, and adjust irrigation cycle timing accordingly.
Custom alarm thresholds: High and low VWC alarm limits are configurable per sensor. When actual substrate moisture falls outside that window, the app sends a remote notification — catching irrigation failures or runaway over-watering before crop damage occurs.
Addressing button: Each WCS-1 has a dedicated addressing button on the module, allowing multiple sensors on a shared RJ12 bus to be assigned unique identifiers during setup without additional hardware.
The WCS-1 connects to the Aqua-X (NFS-1) via the included RJ12 cable and T-splitter, daisy-chaining additional sensors along the same bus up to the eight-sensor maximum per controller. The Aqua-X uses the live VWC data to trigger irrigation events when the substrate reaches a defined dry-back threshold — replacing time-based scheduling with condition-based control. This is the core mechanism behind modern crop steering: VWC targets are set differently for vegetative, early flower, and late flower stages to influence whether the plant drives vegetative growth or reproductive output.

The WCS-1 is designed for use with the TrolMaster Aqua-X (NFS-1) irrigation controller. It is not compatible with standalone timers or third-party controllers. If you are running an Aqua-X Pro (NFS-2) or another TrolMaster platform, review the sensor compatibility chart — newer WCS models in the TrolMaster lineup support a wider range of controllers.
Up to 8 WCS-1 sensors can be connected to a single Aqua-X (NFS-1) controller. When multiple sensors are active, the Aqua-X and the app display the average VWC value across all connected sensors, which smooths out localized hotspots or dry pockets in large slabs or multi-pot setups.

No. The WCS-1 measures water content percentage only. It does not measure electrical conductivity (EC) or substrate temperature. If your crop steering protocol requires EC and temperature data alongside VWC, TrolMaster's WCS-2 or WCS-3 sensors cover those additional parameters and are worth evaluating for your build.
