Direct-insertion soil pH measurement — no slurry, ±0.01 accuracy, IP57-rated field build.
The Apera PH850-SL (AI5537) is a portable pH meter purpose-built for direct soil pH measurement using the Swiss LabSen® 553 PVC 3-in-1 pH/Temperature Spear Electrode — insert it straight into soil, coco coir, or other grow media and get a stable reading in 15–30 seconds, no slurry preparation required.
The Apera PH850-SL is a field-grade portable pH meter in Apera's Value Series, paired at the factory with the Swiss LabSen® 553 PVC 3-in-1 pH/Temperature Spear Electrode — an electrode engineered specifically for direct soil and grow-media testing. The kit ships ready to calibrate and deploy: meter, LabSen 553 electrode, pH calibration buffer solutions, and a rugged carrying case are all included.
The PH850-SL meter platform supports pH measurement across the full 0–14 range at ±0.01 accuracy, simultaneous temperature display, and auto-hold. It can also measure ORP in mV mode when an ORP probe is connected (sold separately), making it a flexible bench tool as well as a field instrument. The integrated foldable stand converts the unit from handheld to benchtop configuration without additional hardware.
Licensed cannabis and hemp cultivation operators running soil, amended coco, or living-soil programs need reliable root-zone pH data at canopy scale — multiple sample points per bed, per run. Slurry-based methods slow that workflow down significantly. The AI5537 is built for growers who are pulling pH readings across dozens of containers or beds per shift and need a meter that can keep up without breaking down from exposure to moisture, fertigation residue, or general grow-room conditions.
It also works for nutrient solution spot-checks — insert the spear electrode directly into solution for a standard liquid-phase reading. Indoor and greenhouse operations that want one meter to handle both root-zone media and reservoir/runoff verification will find the LabSen 553 combination covers both use cases without switching probes.
The LabSen 553 spear electrode is the core of this kit. Its S-type spear glass membrane is rated 10× stronger than conventional glass membranes, specifically engineered to resist breakage during insertion into compacted media. The open-and-ceramic double-junction design with polymer electrolyte maximizes contact with the sample while resisting junction clogs — no electrolyte refilling required. The long-life reference system uses an AgCl/silver-wire construction with a cotton-packed glass tube that stabilizes the reference against temperature-driven electrolyte reactions, extending electrode service life.
On the meter side, 1–3 point auto-calibration recognizes pH 1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01, and 12.45 reference standards (USA/NIST). Electrode slope is displayed after the second and third calibration point — a direct read on probe health without sending the electrode to a lab. The self-diagnosis function flags out-of-range values and electrode invalidation in real time. Auto temperature compensation (ATC) runs continuously from -5 to 80°C. The IP57-rated enclosure with soft silicone grip sleeve is dustproof and submersion-resistant — practical for daily grow-room use.
Root-zone pH drift is one of the most common causes of unexplained nutrient lockout in soil and amended-coco runs. A meter that requires slurry prep often means operators skip spot checks mid-cycle because the workflow is too slow. The PH850-SL removes that friction: press the spear tip into moistened media at root depth, wait 15–30 seconds for the stability indicator to confirm, log the reading. Repeat across your sample points without reagent mixing between every pull.
For multi-site or multi-room operations, the rugged carry case and AA-battery power mean the meter travels between rooms or facilities without needing a charging station. The foldable stand supports use as a benchtop instrument for reservoir checks or slurry confirmation when needed. Replacement LabSen 553 electrodes are available separately through HSC, so the meter body stays in service when the probe reaches end of life — typically six months under heavy commercial use, per Apera's warranty terms.

The LabSen 553 performs best when the soil has sufficient moisture for ion mobility — typically field capacity or slightly below. In very dry or heavily compacted media, pre-moistening the insertion point with a small amount of distilled water improves contact and reading stability. It is not designed for bone-dry substrate testing.
Yes. The PH850-SL meter is compatible with other Apera electrodes using BNC and RCA connectors, including liquid-phase electrodes for reservoir or runoff testing. The LabSen 553 included in the AI5537 kit also works directly in nutrient solutions — it is not exclusively a soil probe.
The meter's electrode slope display is your primary indicator. Slope is shown after completing a 2- or 3-point calibration; values outside the expected range signal a degraded probe. The self-diagnosis function will also flag electrode invalidation. Apera's probe warranty is 6 months, and under daily commercial use that is a reasonable replacement interval to plan for.
The AI5537 kit includes pH 4.00, 7.00, and 10.01 buffer solutions. For most soil and grow-media applications, a 2-point calibration using pH 4.00 and 7.00 covers the range where cannabis root zones typically operate (5.8–7.2 pH).
The LabSen 553 spear electrode is rated for direct testing in soil, coco coir, and other semi-solid grow media. For rockwool, the typical approach is to collect runoff or a squeezed-sample and measure in liquid phase — the PH850-SL handles that as well.
