The Apera PH850-MS (AI5539) is a field-grade portable pH meter built specifically for semi-micro sample volumes, pairing the PH850 meter body with the Swiss LabSen® 243-6 combination pH/temperature electrode — a 6mm-diameter semi-micro probe capable of reading samples as small as 200µL standard, and down to 60µL with the included micro-container. Accurate to ±0.01 pH across the full 0–14 range, it's a practical bench-to-floor tool for any cultivation environment where small or precious sample volumes need precise, repeatable pH data.
The Apera PH850-MS is a handheld, field-portable pH meter purpose-built for semi-micro and small-volume pH measurement. Where a standard combination electrode requires a beaker-sized sample, the PH850-MS — outfitted with the Swiss-made LabSen® 243-6 electrode — dips directly into a test tube or micro-container. The LabSen 243-6 is a refillable combination pH/temperature electrode: 100mm long, 6mm in diameter, with a low-resistance (<350MΩ) S-type semi-micro glass membrane. Its integrated 30KΩ thermistor feeds temperature data directly to the meter for automatic temperature compensation (ATC), so pH readings are corrected in real time without a separate temperature probe.
The meter platform itself is the proven Apera PH850 body — a standard BNC-connected handheld meter with a large LCD showing simultaneous pH and temperature readout, calibration status icons, and a stability indicator (the 'smiley' icon tells you when the reading has settled). The PH850-MS is the same platform used across Apera's 850 Series line, meaning the electrode is field-swappable with other LabSen BNC-compatible probes if your application changes.
Licensed cannabis and hemp cultivation operations routinely work with small-volume samples — tissue culture, concentrated nutrient stock solutions, limited runoff volumes from small containers or plugs, or quality-control checks on expensive extracts or tincture inputs. The LabSen 243-6 electrode is the core of the kit. It runs Apera's proprietary blue gel electrolyte — a non-flowing formulation that eliminates air bubbles inside the glass membrane and allows the electrode to function correctly even when inverted. This matters in practical use: you're not fighting bubble artifacts when probing a small test tube at an angle. The long-life reference system — a glass tube, AgCl granules, and a reference silver wire, with cotton packing at the top to buffer thermal changes between AgCl and electrolyte — is engineered for reference stability over time, extending usable electrode life before replacement.
On the meter side, calibration is 1–3 point auto-calibration with recognition of standard buffer values (1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01, 12.45). Slope data displays after the second and third calibration points, giving you a real-time read on electrode condition — if slope is degrading, the meter tells you before bad data contaminates your records. The self-diagnosis system also flags out-of-range readings and electrode invalidation. Auto power-off, stable-reading auto-hold, and parameter lock round out the intelligent functions. Power is two AA batteries. ORP measurement is available in mV mode with an ORP electrode connected (sold separately, model 301Pt-C).
pH accuracy is a non-negotiable in licensed cannabis and hemp production — off-target root-zone pH is one of the fastest ways to lock out specific nutrients regardless of what the feed chart says. The PH850-MS earns its place not as a replacement for a facility's primary inline or benchtop pH station, but as the precision spot-check tool for situations where sample volume is limited or portability matters.
