Value Series Portable pH Meter Kit

Field-grade pH accuracy in a waterproof, rubber-boot chassis built for daily cultivation use.

The Apera PH850 (AI5510) is a professional-grade portable pH meter designed for reliable, repeatable measurement in the demanding conditions of a commercial grow environment — irrigation lines, fertigation mixing, reservoir checks, and runoff monitoring. It ships as a complete kit with the 201T-F combination pH/temperature electrode, buffer solutions, and carrying case so it's ready to work day one.

What It Is

The Apera PH850 is a handheld portable pH meter built for professional field measurement. The base unit reads pH and temperature simultaneously, and can also measure ORP in mV mode when paired with a compatible ORP probe (model 301Pt-C, sold separately). The meter comes paired with Apera's 201T-F 3-in-1 combination pH and temperature electrode — a lithium glass membrane design housed in a lead-free food-grade glass tube that delivers fast, stable signal response for general water-solution applications.

Calibration is automatic: the meter recognizes up to five standard buffer solutions (pH 1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01, and 12.45) in a 1-, 2-, or 3-point calibration sequence. After the second and third calibration points, electrode slope data is displayed so you can assess whether the probe is still in good working condition — a useful indicator for any operation running multiple meters across multiple rooms. A built-in self-diagnosis function flags calibration errors and guides the user through corrective steps.

The large LCD displays pH and temperature simultaneously, along with a stability indicator icon that shows when the reading has settled — eliminating guesswork on whether to log the number. Calibration-complete icons confirm successful multi-point calibration at a glance.

Built for Grow-Room Conditions

Commercial cannabis and hemp facilities are hard on instrumentation. Humidity runs high, bench surfaces get wet, nutrients splash, and meters get dropped. The PH850 is rated IP57 — fully dustproof and protected against immersion up to 1 meter — making it genuinely suited to reservoir-side and fertigation-skid use, not just a lab bench. The rubber grip sleeve absorbs impact, and the silicone socket protector keeps the BNC port sealed when the electrode is disconnected.

The integrated foldable stand converts the handheld unit to a benchtop configuration without any additional hardware. For head growers or cultivation directors who move between rooms and need a single meter that works in the field and at a nutrient mixing station, that dual-mode capability matters. The standard BNC connector means the meter is compatible with Apera's LabSen professional pH electrode line if a specialized application — high-temperature, flat-surface, or spear — is needed down the line without replacing the meter body.

Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) is provided via the built-in temperature sensor in the 201T-F electrode, which tests pH and temperature simultaneously. This is critical in commercial cultivation where reservoir temperature and room temps vary by season and time of day — ATC keeps your pH readings from drifting with ambient conditions.

Kit Contents & Electrode Quality

AI5510 ships as a complete kit: PH850 meter body, 201T-F pH/temperature combination electrode, 50 mL pH buffer solutions (pH 4.00 and 7.00), instruction manual, screwdriver for battery replacement, and a hard-shell carrying case. Everything needed to calibrate and begin measuring is included out of the box — no separate buffer solution order required to get started.

The 201T-F electrode uses Apera's proprietary lithium glass membrane. The junction design combines ceramic and fiber filaments to minimize clogging — a common failure mode when measuring nutrient-dense fertigation solutions or media runoff. The detachable sensor shield protects the glass membrane from accidental contact when the meter is stored or transported between use points in the facility.

For operations that need to expand into conductivity measurement at the same time, the PH850 platform also exists in a multi-parameter configuration (PC850) using the same meter body — so there is a clear upgrade path without retraining staff on a different interface.

Where It Fits in a Commercial Cultivation Build

pH management is non-negotiable in licensed cannabis and hemp production. Whether you're running a recirculating hydro system, coco hand-water, or an automated fertigation line, consistent pH at the root zone is directly tied to nutrient uptake efficiency, terpene and cannabinoid expression, and ultimately yield quality. The PH850 is accurate enough for professional use (±0.01 pH) while being durable and simple enough that any cultivation technician can be calibrating and logging with minimal training.

The self-diagnosis and slope-display functions make it easier to maintain measurement integrity across a multi-meter fleet. When electrode condition degrades — as it inevitably does with heavy use in nutrient-rich environments — the slope readout tells you before you're logging bad data. For compliance-focused operations tracking fertigation records, that data confidence matters.

The PH850 is appropriate for reservoir monitoring, feed and drain solution verification, municipal or well water source checks prior to mixing, and manual spot-checks in media or runoff. It is not a continuous monitoring solution — for inline or continuous pH, a fixed transmitter and electrode assembly is the right tool. But for daily hand-measurement across multiple grow rooms or production zones, the PH850 is a well-built, field-proven instrument.

Frequently Asked Questions

What buffer solutions are included in the AI5510 kit?

The kit includes 50 mL each of pH 4.00 and pH 7.00 buffer solutions — sufficient to run a standard 2-point calibration out of the box. For a 3-point calibration (recommended when your working range extends above pH 7), a pH 10.01 buffer solution is needed and must be sourced separately.

Can the PH850 measure ORP (oxidation-reduction potential)?

Yes. The PH850 can measure ORP in mV mode when paired with a compatible ORP probe, such as the Apera 301Pt-C. The ORP probe is not included in the AI5510 kit and is sold separately.

How do I know when the electrode needs to be replaced?

The PH850 displays electrode slope data after completing 2- or 3-point calibration. A slope significantly outside the normal range (approximately 85–105%) signals that electrode performance has degraded. The self-diagnosis function will also flag out-of-range conditions and guide you through corrective steps.

Is the PH850 compatible with electrodes other than the included 201T-F?

Yes. The meter uses a standard BNC connector and is compatible with Apera's LabSen Series professional pH electrodes. This means you can pair the meter body with specialized electrodes — such as flat-surface, spear, or high-temperature variants — without replacing the meter itself.

Can the PH850 be used as a benchtop meter at a nutrient mixing station?

Yes. The meter includes an integrated foldable stand that allows it to sit upright on a work surface in benchtop mode. This makes it practical as a fixed station instrument at a fertigation mixing skid or in a head grower's workspace, in addition to portable field use across grow rooms.
