The Apera PH850-MT is a portable pH and temperature meter bundled with the LabSen 763 blade spear electrode — a probe built specifically for direct insertion into solid and semi-solid sample matrices. Where a standard pH probe requires a liquid solution or slurry, the LabSen 763's food-grade titanium blade tip penetrates dense material cleanly, placing the S-type spear glass membrane in direct contact with the sample without damaging the sensing element.
The meter platform is Apera's PH850 — a field-grade portable unit with IP57 waterproof and dustproof protection, a silicone grip sleeve, and a foldable stand that doubles as a benchtop configuration when needed. Power comes from AAA batteries (×3). The full kit ships in a rugged carrying case with calibration buffer solutions (pH 4.00, 7.00, and 10.01 at 50 mL each), a screwdriver, and the printed manual.
Apera's LabSen 763 electrode is built around sensor technology and materials sourced from Switzerland. The S-type spear glass membrane is rated approximately 10 times stronger than conventional glass bulb membranes — it handles the mechanical stress of cutting through dense material without fracturing. Readings stabilize in 15 to 30 seconds after insertion.
The reference system uses an open-and-ceramic double-junction design with polymer electrolyte to maintain full sample contact while resisting junction clogging from particulates. Apera's proprietary blue gel inner solution is non-flowing — it generates no air bubbles and functions correctly even when the probe is held inverted. No electrolyte refill is ever required. A built-in thermistor feeds temperature data directly to the meter for automatic temperature compensation (ATC) without a separate probe.
The PH850 meter runs 1-to-3-point automatic calibration, auto-recognizing standard buffer values at pH 1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01, and 12.45 from both USA and NIST series. After a second or third calibration point, the meter displays electrode slope — a direct indicator of probe health. The self-diagnosis routine flags out-of-range readings and detects electrode invalidation, cutting down on false data before it reaches a logbook.
Three configurable reading stability criteria let you tune response behavior to the sample type. Auto power-off conserves battery life in the field. An on-screen stability icon confirms when a reading is settled enough to record. For operators who want ORP data alongside pH, the meter accepts an ORP probe (Apera model 301Pt-C, sold separately) in mV mode.
Most pH meters on a grow or processing floor are set up for liquid — nutrient solution, irrigation water, or extracts in suspension. The PH850-MT fills the gap when you need pH data from something that isn't a liquid: plant tissue cores, cured flower or biomass bricks, concentrates with solid carrier matrices, or food-adjacent products in a licensed hemp processing environment.
The IP57 rating and silicone sleeve mean the meter survives a processing environment — rinse-downs, humid cure rooms, and the general abuse of production use. The foldable stand is practical for bench-side work where the meter sits while the probe is being cleaned or reconditioned between samples. Yes. The PH850 meter base is fully compatible with standard liquid pH measurement, and the LabSen 763 electrode also functions in general water solutions. However, if your primary use is nutrient solution or irrigation water, a standard liquid-optimized probe kit is more cost-effective — the PH850-MT is spec'd and priced around the solid-sample use case.
No. The LabSen 763 uses Apera's proprietary blue gel inner solution, which is sealed and non-flowing. There is no electrolyte refill procedure. Standard maintenance is rinsing the electrode with distilled or deionized water between samples and storing it in the supplied soaking solution when not in use.
The PH850 meter displays a stability icon (a smiley face indicator on the LCD) when the reading has met the configured stability criteria. The meter also offers three selectable stability threshold settings so you can match the response criterion to your sample type and throughput requirements.
Apera warrants the LabSen 763 probe for 6 months from delivery. Typical electrode service life across the Apera LabSen line is 12–24 months depending on usage frequency and maintenance. Replacement LabSen 763 electrodes are available separately through HSC — contact us for availability and lead time.
The LabSen 763 uses a BNC + RCA connector combination and is compatible with Apera meters that have both connection types, including the PH910, PH9500, PH850, PC8500, and PH820. It may not be compatible with non-Apera meters because the thermistor pinout for ATC can differ between manufacturers.
