The Apera PH850-FT is a portable field pH meter built on Apera's established PH850 platform, configured specifically for flat and semi-solid surface measurement. Where a standard round-bulb pH probe requires full submersion in liquid, the PH850-FT ships with the LabSen 373 — a POM-body (polyoxymethylene) 3-in-1 electrode that uses a flat glass membrane and a PTFE ring junction. That geometry allows the probe tip to lie flush against wet solid and semi-solid surfaces, making contact that a conventional probe physically cannot achieve.
The meter itself outputs pH and temperature readings simultaneously on a large backlit LCD. Auto Temperature Compensation (ATC) corrects readings in real time as ambient or sample temperature changes. The platform supports mV/ORP measurement when paired with a compatible ORP probe (sold separately), which means the same meter body can serve double duty for redox monitoring without adding another instrument to your kit.
In a licensed cannabis or hemp facility, the most common application for a flat-tip probe is direct pH measurement of rockwool slabs, coco coir blocks, peat-based substrates, and culture medium — anywhere you need a reading at the surface of the media rather than from a poured-off runoff sample. Runoff pH is a useful secondary data point, but surface measurement captures what the root zone is actually seeing before solution migration.
The PH850-FT also handles general liquid measurement without issue, so cultivators can use it for reservoir spot-checks, foliar dilution verification, or nutrient solution QC in addition to substrate surface testing. It is not a specialty-only instrument; the flat electrode is simply more capable than a round-bulb probe in surface scenarios where the other probe style underperforms. The LabSen 373 electrode uses Apera's proprietary blue gel inner electrolyte, which does not flow and generates no air bubbles. This means the probe functions accurately even when held horizontally or at odd angles against a grow slab — a practical advantage in tight canopy spaces. The long-life reference system is composed of a glass tube, AgCl, and a reference silver wire; a cotton plug at the top of the reference tube prevents reaction between the AgCl and electrolyte when temperature changes, extending reference stability over the life of the probe.
The meter's intelligent self-diagnosis suite flags out-of-range readings and electrode invalidation before they produce bad data. Calibration is 1 to 3 points, with automatic buffer recognition for the five standard pH points (1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01, 12.45). After a two- or three-point calibration, electrode slope is displayed — a real indicator of probe health that matters in production environments where a drifting electrode can cost a full crop cycle. Auto power-off and configurable parameter settings (resolution, stability criteria, temperature unit) round out the operator controls.
The PH850-FT carries an IP57 waterproof rating — submersible to one meter for up to 30 minutes — and is wrapped in a soft silicone/rubber sleeve that absorbs impact and keeps the grip secure in wet gloves. Powered by standard AA batteries, not proprietary cells, so sourcing replacements at any facility or warehouse supply is not a logistics issue.
The kit ships as a complete ready-to-calibrate package: the PH850 meter body, the LabSen 373 flat pH/temperature electrode, and pH buffer solutions (4.00, 7.00, and 10.01, 50 mL each). A conventional round-bulb electrode requires full contact with liquid to get an accurate reading. On solid or semi-solid surfaces — rockwool slabs, coco coir, culture medium, or compacted substrate — a round bulb can't make even contact and will either give a drifted reading or none at all. Yes. The LabSen 373 flat electrode is suitable for general water solutions in addition to flat and semi-solid surfaces. You can use the same meter to spot-check your reservoir, nutrient concentrate, or irrigation lines without swapping instruments.
After a two- or three-point calibration, the meter displays electrode slope. A healthy electrode should read between approximately 90–105% slope. As the electrode ages, slope will drift outside that range and calibration will become unstable. Apera's typical stated service life for LabSen electrodes is 12–24 months depending on use frequency and storage; they recommend replacement every 12–18 months for best accuracy.
Yes — the PH850 meter body uses a standard BNC connector and is compatible with Apera's full LabSen series electrode lineup. If you need a different electrode geometry for a specific application (spear tip, micro, high-temp), you can swap the electrode without replacing the meter.
The PH850-FT auto-recognizes five standard pH buffer points: 1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01, and 12.45. The kit includes 50 mL each of 4.00, 7.00, and 10.01 buffer solutions. For most cultivation applications, a 2-point calibration using the 4.00 and 7.00 buffers is sufficient to bracket the typical nutrient solution pH range (5.5–7.0).
