Smoke Detector for Hydro-X with cable set

Integrated smoke detection for TrolMaster Hydro-X — real-time alerts, plug-and-play RJ12 wiring.

The TrolMaster MBS-SD is a dedicated smoke detector engineered for the Hydro-X Environmental Control System. When smoke is detected anywhere in the grow, the controller pushes an immediate alert to your phone — giving your team time to respond before a situation escalates.

What the MBS-SD Does

The MBS-SD is TrolMaster's purpose-built smoke detector for the Hydro-X platform. Unlike a standalone battery smoke alarm, this sensor is wired directly into the Hydro-X controller network via a standard RJ12 bus connection. The moment any connected MBS-SD unit detects smoke, the Hydro-X system generates an immediate user alert delivered to your phone — day or night, lights-on or lights-off.

A built-in photocell gives the unit day/night mode awareness, and a small address-assignment button on the unit allows each sensor to be individually identified within the controller's network. This means when an alert fires, you know which sensor triggered it — useful for facilities with multiple rooms or zones sharing a single Hydro-X controller.

Who Needs This Sensor

Any licensed cannabis or hemp cultivation facility running TrolMaster Hydro-X controllers should treat smoke detection as a non-negotiable layer of their safety stack. Commercial grow rooms concentrate heat-generating equipment — high-wattage fixtures, ballasts, HVAC equipment, CO2 generators, and dense electrical infrastructure — in a single enclosed environment. Early smoke detection creates the window between a contained incident and a facility-level loss.

The MBS-SD is particularly relevant for multi-room builds where staff are not present in every room at all times, and for operators running lights-out dark periods. If your facility is already on the Hydro-X platform, adding smoke coverage is a straightforward cable run — no separate alarm panel, no extra app, no separate subscription. The alert routes through the same Hydro-X notification system your team already monitors.

Integration and Scalability

The MBS-SD uses the same RJ12 bus architecture as every other sensor in the Hydro-X MBS lineup — temperature, humidity, CO2, PAR. Installation is plug-and-play: connect the included 16 ft RJ12 cable and T-splitter, assign an address with the onboard button, and the controller recognizes the sensor. No additional software configuration is required beyond addressing.

Up to five MBS-SD units can be daisy-chained to a single Hydro-X controller, making zone-level coverage across a larger canopy footprint practical without adding separate alarm infrastructure. For facilities scaling across multiple rooms, each room's Hydro-X controller can carry its own set of MBS-SD sensors, and all alerts surface through the same unified Hydro-X monitoring interface operators are already using.

Installation and Maintenance Notes

Mount the MBS-SD in a location representative of the room's air mass — generally near the ceiling in the center of the grow zone, away from direct irrigation spray, foggers, or evaporative cooling discharge. The sensor is rated for temperatures between 32 and 122 °F and relative humidity at or below 90%, which covers the working range of virtually all licensed indoor cultivation environments.

TrolMaster specifies that all MBS-series sensors must remain dry and clean throughout their service life. Do not allow irrigation water, condensate, or cleaning agents to contact the sensor housing. Inspect cable connections at each RJ12 junction periodically to confirm secure seating, and verify alert functionality at commissioning and after any significant environmental change in the room. The compact 6.2" × 3.4" × 3.4" form factor makes ceiling or wall mounting straightforward with standard hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the MBS-SD work with Hydro-X Pro and Hydro-X Plus, or only one version?

The MBS-SD is compatible with all Hydro-X controller variants. It connects via the standard RJ12 bus shared across the entire Hydro-X MBS sensor ecosystem.

How many MBS-SD units can I run on one Hydro-X controller?

Up to five MBS-SD smoke detectors can be connected to a single Hydro-X controller. Each unit is individually addressed using the onboard button, so the controller can identify which sensor triggered an alert.

How does the alert reach me when smoke is detected?

When any connected MBS-SD detects smoke, the Hydro-X controller sends a push notification to the user's phone through the TrolMaster app — the same alert channel used for temperature, humidity, and other out-of-range conditions. No separate alarm panel or monitoring subscription is required.

Can I place the MBS-SD in a room with high humidity, like a propagation or drying space?

The MBS-SD is rated for environments up to 90% relative humidity, which covers most propagation and veg room conditions. Keep the sensor free of direct water contact, condensate, and irrigation spray regardless of ambient humidity levels. Drying rooms that run very high RH for extended periods should be evaluated against that 90% ceiling.

Does the MBS-SD require any tools or special wiring to install?

No. The sensor uses a plug-and-play RJ12 connection and ships with a 16 ft RJ12 cable and a T-splitter for daisy-chaining into an existing sensor run. Address assignment is done with the small button on the unit itself. No additional wiring, conduit, or alarm panel integration is needed.
