What It Is

The Apera PH8500-SS is a premium-series portable pH meter designed for professional pH measurement of food samples — meat, cheese, dairy products, fruit, dough, and other semi-solids — as well as general water solutions. At its core is the LabSen® 753 titanium-body spear electrode, built on proprietary Swiss sensor technology and materials. The spear tip penetrates solid and semi-solid samples directly, eliminating the need to prepare slurries before testing.

The meter reads across a wide -2.00 to 19.99 pH range at ±0.01 pH accuracy, with 0–100°C automatic temperature compensation (ATC) handled by the electrode's integrated temperature sensor. Auto-calibration recognizes up to 12 standard buffer solutions (including pH 1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01, and 12.45) across 1–3 calibration points, and the built-in self-diagnosis warns of out-of-range values, electrode invalidation, and calibration errors — so you know the reading is trustworthy before you record it.

Who It's For

Any commercial cultivation or processing operation where sample consistency, substrate pH, or product quality requires documented, traceable measurement. Cannabis and hemp operators running tissue culture, substrate testing, post-harvest processing, or infused product QC benefit from a meter that can read semi-solid media directly — agar plates, coco plugs, extracts, edibles, or cured product — without sacrificing accuracy.

It's equally at home in food science, canning quality control, dairy processing, or any regulated environment where GLP-standard records are expected. The 500-set data logger with USB output means readings move off the meter and into your documentation workflow, not a clipboard. If your facility runs internal QC audits or tracks pH trending across batches, the PH8500-SS gives you the data structure to do it properly.

Key Features

The LabSen® 753 electrode is the defining component. Its S-type spear glass membrane delivers stabilized readings in 15 to 30 seconds and is up to 10 times stronger than traditional glass membranes — reducing breakage risk when inserting into dense samples. The open-and-ceramic double-junction with polymer electrolyte ensures full contact with test samples while minimizing junction clogging. The titanium alloy body is food-grade, easy to clean, and requires no electrolyte refilling.

On the meter body: a large backlit LCD displays pH and temperature simultaneously. A soft silicone case provides grip in wet or processing environments. The foldable stand converts the unit to benchtop configuration when needed. Power is supplied by 3 AA alkaline batteries, with USB available for both data output and charging. GLP data management stores up to 500 time-stamped data sets — auto or manual/timed — with data protection retained even through power outages. The IP57 waterproof rating handles washdown conditions without issue.

How It Fits a Commercial Build

Most commercial grows already have a bench-top or inline pH meter for nutrient solution management. The PH8500-SS fills the gap for everything else: substrate spot checks, cured product QC, water activity profiling, tissue culture media verification, and any other sample that a liquid probe can't reliably reach. Having a dedicated food-grade spear meter in the workflow means those checks don't pull your primary meter off the nutrient line — and the GLP log gives you a clean audit trail separate from your fertigation records.

The benchtop-convertible stand and USB data output mean this unit works as a lab-grade instrument at scale, not just a handheld spot checker. For multi-site operators, the meter travels easily, calibrates quickly against standard buffers, and produces records that hold up to third-party audit. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to make a slurry before testing semi-solid or solid samples?

No. The LabSen® 753 spear electrode is designed for direct insertion into solid and semi-solid samples — dough, fruit, cheese, meat, substrate blocks, agar media — without slurry preparation. The spear glass membrane penetrates the sample and stabilizes within 15 to 30 seconds.

What buffer solutions does the PH8500-SS recognize during calibration?

The meter auto-recognizes up to 12 standard buffer solutions. Confirmed recognized standards include pH 1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01, and 12.45 across 1, 2, or 3 calibration points. The self-diagnosis function flags incorrect calibrations before you lock them in.

How does the GLP data logger work?

The meter stores up to 500 time-stamped data sets in GLP-compliant format. Logging can be triggered manually or set to auto/timed intervals. Data is retained through power outages and exported via USB to a computer for reporting or recordkeeping.

Is the electrode replaceable, and what is the warranty?

Yes — the LabSen® 753 is a separate, replaceable electrode. Apera warrants the instrument for three years and the probe for six months from delivery. Replacement electrodes are available through HSC; request a quote for availability.

Can the PH8500-SS be used as a benchtop meter?

Yes. The unit includes a foldable stand that allows it to sit flat on a work surface in benchtop configuration, in addition to handheld field use. The IP57 waterproof rating and soft silicone case make it equally practical in wet processing and lab environments.
