Premium Series Portable pH Meter for Strong Acid with GLP Data Logger

Lab-grade strong-acid pH measurement in a field-ready, IP57-rated portable meter.

Apera PH8500-HF (AI5525) pairs the PH8500 meter body with the Swiss LabSen® 833 pH/temp. electrode — a combination engineered specifically for strong acid and hydrofluoric acid solutions where a standard glass electrode would degrade rapidly. GLP data logging, 500-record storage, and USB output make it audit-ready for licensed operations.

What the PH8500-HF Is

The Apera PH8500-HF is a Premium Series portable pH meter configured specifically for solutions containing strong acid or hydrofluoric acid — including storage battery solutions and aggressive cleaning chemistry. The meter covers a 0–14 pH range with ±0.01 pH accuracy and a temperature range of -5 to 100°C (23–212°F), with automatic temperature compensation built in.

The included Swiss LabSen® 833 is a glass-body, refillable pH/temp. combination electrode. Its HF glass membrane is engineered to resist hydrofluoric corrosion and is rated for approximately 1,000 measurements in HF-containing solutions (at concentrations up to 0.1 mol/L or 0.2% wt%, measurement time under one minute). A Silver Ion Trap reference system prevents junction clogs from sulfide- or protein-bearing samples, and Apera's proprietary non-flowing blue gel electrolyte eliminates air bubbles — the electrode functions correctly even when held upside-down, which matters in confined or awkward grow-facility spaces.

The hemispherical glass membrane is 10 times more impact-resistant than traditional glass bulb membranes, reducing the risk of breakage during day-to-day field use. The LabSen 833 also includes a built-in temperature sensor for true automatic temperature compensation without a separate probe.

Who Needs This Meter

Licensed cannabis and hemp operators running aggressive acid-wash protocols, pH-down regimens with phosphoric or sulfuric acid, or facilities that work with fluoride-containing water treatment chemistry need an electrode that won't degrade in those matrices. A standard pH probe will suffer junction clogging, membrane erosion, and drifting readings in high-acid environments — the LabSen 833 is built to handle them.

It is equally relevant for quality control teams that need a documented measurement trail. GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) data management is built into the meter: readings can be stored manually or automatically (up to 500 data sets), timestamped with the on-board clock, and exported via USB for integration into cultivation logs, compliance records, or nutrient management programs.

The foldable stand converts the handheld into a stable benchtop unit — useful for lab stations and nutrient mixing areas where hands-free, repeated readings are more practical than holding the meter. AA battery power keeps it running without needing a nearby outlet.

Key Features and Intelligent Functions

Calibration is automatic at 1–3 points, with auto-recognition of the five standard pH buffers: 1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01, and 12.45. The meter auto-recognizes up to 12 buffer types in total. Self-diagnosis monitors for out-of-range readings, incorrect calibration execution, and electrode invalidation — the meter flags problems rather than logging a bad number silently. Calibration reminders and calibration date checking keep documented SOPs on track.

The large white backlit LCD displays pH (or mV) and temperature simultaneously, along with a stability indicator icon — readings are held when the stability icon confirms the signal has settled, reducing operator-to-operator read variation. The soft silicone grip case absorbs impact and makes the unit comfortable to handle with wet or gloved hands.

IP57 waterproof and dustproof rating means the meter survives submersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes — appropriate for humid grow rooms, wet benches, and outdoor greenhouse environments. Data can be exported to a PC via USB and reviewed through web-based PC-Link software compatible with Chrome, Edge, and Firefox browsers.

How It Fits a Commercial Cultivation Build

In a commercial cannabis or hemp facility, pH control is a daily-frequency, compliance-adjacent task. Nutrient solutions, fertigation inputs, and cleaning chemistry all require verified, logged readings — not a consumer-grade spot check. The PH8500-HF gives a cultivation team a field-portable instrument that can move between reservoirs, mixing stations, and tissue sample points without the fragility concern of a standard glass electrode in low-pH environments.

The GLP data log means every reading can be assigned a timestamp and exported for facility records. For operators working toward ISO, GAP, or state-mandated documentation standards, having pH data that is auditable — not reconstructed from handwritten logs — removes a common compliance gap.

The convertible benchtop/handheld design reduces the need for two separate instruments. Teams can dock it at the nutrient mixing station for routine checks and take the same meter into the grow for in-row spot readings. Replacement LabSen 833 electrodes are available separately through HSC when the electrode reaches end-of-life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a strong acid environment require a special electrode?

Standard glass pH electrodes use junction systems and glass membranes that corrode rapidly in high-acid or hydrofluoric acid matrices, leading to junction clogs, drifting baselines, and shortened electrode life. The LabSen 833 uses a specialized HF glass membrane resistant to fluoride corrosion and a Silver Ion Trap reference that prevents the silver sulfide contamination common in protein- or sulfide-bearing samples. For general-use pH meters exposed to these conditions, measurement accuracy degrades quickly — often without an obvious error flag.

How many measurements can the LabSen 833 electrode handle in HF solutions?

Apera rates the LabSen 833 for approximately 1,000 measurements in hydrofluoric acid solutions, under the condition that HF concentration is below 0.1 mol/L (0.2% wt%) and individual measurement time is under one minute. For strong acid solutions that do not contain HF, electrode service life extends considerably further.

Can this meter double as a benchtop unit at a nutrient mixing station?

Yes. The PH8500-HF includes a foldable stand that props the meter upright on a flat surface, functioning as a benchtop meter for hands-free repeated readings. The large backlit LCD and stability icon are readable at a comfortable working distance. The same unit can be picked up and taken into the grow for in-row checks without any reconfiguration.

How does GLP data logging work and can the data be exported?

The meter stores up to 500 data sets in GLP format — each record is timestamped by the built-in clock and can be saved manually or set to auto-log. Data is exported via USB cable to a PC, where Apera's web-based PC-Link software (compatible with Chrome, Edge, and Firefox) allows review, sorting, and report generation. This is the chain of custody a compliance-oriented operation needs for nutrient management documentation.

What buffer solutions does the auto-calibration recognize?

The PH8500-HF auto-recognizes standard pH buffers including 1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01, and 12.45, and supports up to 12 buffer types in total for 1–3 point calibration routines. Calibration reminders and a calibration date log keep the instrument within a documented calibration schedule.
