What It Is

The Apera PH8500-SL is a Premium Series portable pH meter purpose-built for professional direct soil and substrate pH measurement. Its core advantage over a standard bench or solution pH meter is the included Swiss LabSen® 553 PVC 3-in-1 spear electrode — a sensor engineered from the ground up to be inserted directly into soil, coco coir, rockwool, and other solid or semi-solid grow media without requiring operators to prepare a soil slurry first.

The LabSen 553's S-type spear glass membrane carries low electrical resistance and high mechanical firmness, delivering fully stabilized readings in 15 to 30 seconds. The membrane is 10 times stronger than traditional glass membranes, which means it resists impact and accidental breakage during insertion. An open, ceramic double-junction with polymer electrolyte ensures full contact with the test sample while minimizing junction clogging — and unlike many electrodes, the LabSen 553 requires no electrolyte refilling.

The long-life reference system consists of a glass tube, AgCl, and a reference silver wire. Cotton packed at the top of the slim glass tube prevents reaction between AgCl and electrolyte during temperature changes, stabilizing the reference system and extending electrode service life.
