Why do I need a dedicated hardness meter if I'm already running a TDS or EC meter?

TDS and EC readings reflect total dissolved solids or ionic conductivity — they do not distinguish between calcium, magnesium, sodium, bicarbonate, or any other ion. Two water sources with identical EC readings can have very different Ca²⁺/Mg²⁺ concentrations. A hardness meter gives you the specific Ca/Mg load in your source or feed water, which is what actually matters for nutrient program accuracy and Ca/Mg availability to the plant.

Does the YD300 measure calcium and magnesium separately, or only total hardness?

The YD300 measures total hardness — the combined concentration of Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions. It does not split out calcium-only and magnesium-only readings.
