What It Is

The Apera PC400S is a portable, handheld multiparameter meter that simultaneously measures six water quality parameters: pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), salinity, resistivity, and temperature. It ships as a complete kit under SKU AI423, including the 201T-S 3-in-1 pH/temperature combination electrode, the BPB (Brush-Resistant Platinum Black) 2301T-S conductivity/temperature electrode, a USB cable, PC-Link software for Windows, and six pre-mixed calibration solution bottles — all packed in a rugged carrying case.

The meter is powered by four AA batteries and can also receive power via the USB connection, giving operators flexibility for bench use or continuous monitoring setups. The large backlit LCD displays pH or EC alongside temperature simultaneously, with on-screen icons that confirm reading stability and completed calibration status — no guessing whether the reading has settled.

Purpose-Built for Commercial Cultivation

In a licensed cannabis or hemp facility, pH drift and EC variance directly affect nutrient uptake, yield consistency, and compliance documentation. A meter that logs nothing leaves you reconstructing hand-written records during an audit. The PC400S addresses this with a built-in GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) datalogger that stores up to 1,000 measurement groups — each tagged with the parameter, value, unit, temperature, date, and time. That data exports to a PC via USB, giving you a defensible, time-stamped record of every feed and reservoir check.

The IP57 waterproof and dustproof rating means the unit survives splash events, high-humidity grow rooms, and routine washdowns without requiring protective handling. Whether you are walking media rows in a large indoor facility or bench-checking reservoir pH in a greenhouse, the PC400S is rated to operate in the conditions commercial cultivation actually produces.

Calibration and Measurement Intelligence

The PC400S supports 1-to-5 point automatic pH calibration using USA or NIST standard buffer series (pH 1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01, 12.45), with automatic recognition of the buffer in the vial — no manual input. A calibration reminder function alerts the operator when recalibration is due, and the Smart Self-Diagnosis function identifies common calibration errors and guides correction before a bad reading is logged. The electrode slope is displayed after multi-point calibration, giving a direct read on probe health without needing a separate diagnostic tool.

On the conductivity side, the BPB platinum black sensor covers a full 0 to 200 mS/cm range at ±1% F.S. accuracy with single-tap switching between EC, TDS, salinity, and resistivity modes. Automatic temperature compensation (ATC) runs across the full 0–100°C range via the integrated sensors on both electrodes, so readings stay accurate regardless of solution temperature — relevant when measuring warm reservoir water or comparing samples taken at different times of day.

Purified water and ammonia-added purified water measuring modes are also available, adding utility for operators running RO or deionized source water in their feed programs.

How It Fits a Commercial Build

A single AI423 kit covers the full measurement stack a head grower or cultivation director needs for daily feed prep, reservoir management, and runoff tracking — without carrying three separate instruments. The six-parameter scope means one calibration routine, one set of consumable electrodes, and one export file for records. For multi-site operators, the USB data output and PC-Link software allow consistent recordkeeping protocols across facilities.

The PC400S pairs well with automated dosing and irrigation controllers as a manual verification tool: pull a physical reading before a fertigation cycle and compare against the controller's inline sensor to catch sensor drift early. It also serves as a primary measurement instrument for smaller licensed operations that do not yet have inline monitoring infrastructure. The carrying case makes it straightforward to deploy across multiple rooms or greenhouses in a single shift.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the AI423 measure salinity and resistivity, or just pH and EC?

All six parameters — pH, EC, TDS, salinity, resistivity, and temperature — are native to the PC400S. Switching between EC, TDS, salinity, and resistivity is a single tap on the keypad; no additional probes or modules are required.

How does the GLP datalogger export data, and what format does it produce?

The meter connects to a Windows PC via the included USB cable and PC-Link software. The 1,000-group memory stores each record with parameter, measured value, unit, temperature, date, and time. Data exports through the PC-Link application for spreadsheet-compatible use, or the USB connection can be used for real-time data capture during a timed measurement session.

Can this meter handle the high-humidity and splash conditions of a commercial grow room?

Yes. The PC400S carries an IP57 waterproof and dustproof rating, which means it is rated for immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes and full dust ingress protection. It is designed for field and industrial environments, not just lab benches.

What calibration solutions are included, and how many calibration points can I set?

The kit ships with six pre-mixed calibration solution bottles. The meter supports up to 5-point automatic pH calibration and automatically recognizes standard buffers at pH 1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01, and 12.45. A built-in calibration reminder alerts you when recalibration is due, and the self-diagnosis function flags probe condition issues before they affect measurement accuracy.

Are replacement electrodes available when the included probes reach end of life?

Yes. The 201T-S pH/temperature electrode and 2301T-S BPB conductivity/temperature electrode are standard Apera replacements available separately. The probe warranty is six months from delivery; the meter itself carries a two-year warranty. Contact HSC to quote replacement electrodes alongside your initial order.
