What It Is

The PH60Z-VS is a complete smart pH meter kit from Apera Instruments. The kit centers on the PH60Z meter body — a handheld, IP67-rated instrument with a three-color backlit LCD, automatic temperature compensation (0–100 °C), and Bluetooth connectivity — mated to the LabSen 855, a pre-pressurized glass-body pH/temp electrode built with Swiss sensor technology and materials. Together they form a field-portable system capable of measuring pH in liquids that standard electrodes handle poorly: heavy slurries, coatings, nutrient concentrates, resins, gels, and other high-viscosity media.

The kit includes the PH60Z meter, the LabSen 855 electrode, ready-to-use calibration buffer solutions at pH 4.00, 7.00, and 10.01, soaking solution, and the Apera CalPod Solution Organizer — all housed in a rugged carrying case. Everything needed to calibrate and measure in the field ships in a single kit, SKU AI3749.

The LabSen 855 Electrode — Why It Matters for Viscous Media

Standard flat-membrane or standard junction electrodes clog quickly when exposed to viscous samples because their junction cannot discharge electrolyte against the pressure of a thick liquid. The LabSen 855 addresses this directly. Its pre-pressurized electrolyte system maintains positive outward pressure at the junction, ensuring a continuous flow of electrolyte and eliminating the clog-and-drift failure mode common with generic probes in heavy media.

The electrode's HA membrane minimizes alkaline error in high-salinity and complex liquid samples. The Silver Ion Trap reference system maintains reference potential stability over time in a silver-ion-free environment, outperforming standard Ag/AgCl systems and significantly extending electrode service life. The glass membrane is rated ten times stronger than traditional glass membranes. A built-in temperature sensor feeds real-time temperature data to the meter for automatic temperature compensation with no secondary probe required.

Smart Data Management via ZenTest Mobile App

The PH60Z body connects to the ZenTest Mobile App (iOS and Android, free download) via Bluetooth. Through the app, operators can record measurements with time stamps, geo-location tags, notes, and photos — then organize and share that data directly from a phone or tablet. All measurement data is stored in the cloud, eliminating local data loss risk.

The ZenTest App also walks users through step-by-step calibration guidance, removing the guesswork from multi-point calibration in field conditions. Parameter settings — including reading alarm thresholds and auto-hold behavior — are fully customizable within the app. For operations that need a documented calibration and measurement log per batch or per room, the PH60Z-VS provides that workflow out of the box.

Where This Fits a Commercial Grow Operation

Licensed cannabis and hemp operators running coco coir, high-EC nutrient programs, or thick amendment blends deal with samples that a standard pen tester cannot read reliably. Nutrient concentrates, coco slurries during pre-charge mixing, foliar feed stocks, and dip tank solutions all sit in the viscosity range where the LabSen 855 outperforms standard electrodes. If your current pH pen is drifting or requiring constant recalibration when testing anything thicker than plain RO water, the probe is likely the failure point — not the meter.

The IP67 waterproof rating and 2,000-hour battery life (AAA cells) make this practical for daily use in a wet grow environment without babying the equipment. The rugged carrying case and CalPod organizer keep calibration solutions organized and protected between uses. The electrode is fully replaceable, so the PH60Z meter body continues to serve as the instrument platform when the LabSen 855 reaches end of service life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes this different from a standard pH pen for measuring nutrient solution?

A standard pen tester uses a conventional junction electrode that relies on passive electrolyte seep. In viscous liquids — thick nutrient concentrates, coco slurries, paste-consistency amendments — that junction clogs, causing slow response and drift. The LabSen 855 electrode uses a pre-pressurized electrolyte system that actively pushes electrolyte through the junction, eliminating the clog. For plain RO or diluted solution at normal runoff viscosity, a standard probe works fine. For anything thicker, the LabSen 855 is purpose-built for it.

Can the LabSen 855 electrode be replaced when it wears out?

Yes. The LabSen 855 is a replaceable electrode that connects to the PH60Z meter body via the meter's standard connector. When the electrode reaches end of service life — typically indicated by slow response, unstable calibration slope, or inability to calibrate within acceptable range — you replace the electrode and continue using the same meter body.

Does the ZenTest App cost extra, and what platforms does it support?

The ZenTest Mobile App is a free download available in the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. It provides cloud-based data logging, step-by-step calibration guidance, and full parameter customization. Cloud storage of measurement data is included with the app.

What calibration buffers are required, and are they included?

The PH60Z-VS supports 1–3 point auto calibration using pH 4.00, 7.00, and 10.01 buffers. The kit ships with ready-to-use calibration buffer solutions at all three values, soaking solution, and the Apera CalPod Solution Organizer to hold the buffers during the calibration process.

Is the meter safe to use in a wet grow room environment?

Yes. The PH60Z meter body carries an IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating, meaning it can withstand temporary immersion. It is also designed to float if accidentally dropped into a reservoir. The 2,000-hour battery life on standard AAA cells makes it practical for daily use without frequent battery changes.
