The Apera PH60-SA (AI3727) pairs the PH60 professional meter body with the Swiss LabSen 845 pH/temp. electrode — purpose-built for accurate measurement in strong alkaline solutions (pH 10–14) and high-salinity solutions above 5,000 ppm, where standard glass-membrane electrodes introduce significant alkaline error. Everything needed to calibrate and test comes included in a single rugged carry case.
Standard pH electrodes use a conventional glass membrane that is susceptible to sodium-ion interference in high-pH or high-salt environments — a phenomenon called alkaline error. In practice, this means a standard meter will read artificially low in caustic solutions or saline reservoirs, giving operators false confidence in their data. The Apera PH60-SA was designed to eliminate that problem.
The kit pairs Apera's proven PH60 handheld meter body with the Swiss-engineered LabSen 845 pH/temp. combination electrode. The LabSen 845 uses an HA (High Alkali) glass membrane specifically formulated for strong alkaline solutions across the pH 10–14 range and high-salinity solutions exceeding 5,000 ppm. The result is accurate, repeatable measurement in conditions that defeat conventional testers — while remaining fully functional for standard water solutions as well.
The HA membrane is the first line of defense. Unlike standard glass, the HA membrane is far less permeable to sodium ions, dramatically reducing alkaline error at the pH levels common in heavy base-nutrient solutions, caustic process streams, and high-EC reservoirs. The membrane construction is also approximately ten times stronger than traditional glass, improving durability over repeated field use.
The second advantage is the Silver Ion Trap Reference System. Conventional Ag/AgCl reference electrodes can allow silver ions to migrate into the sample — reacting with sulfides or chlorides and destabilizing the reference potential over time. The LabSen 845 contains the silver within a trap architecture, maintaining a stable reference junction and extending usable electrode life compared to standard Ag/AgCl designs.
Third is the open-junction polymer electrolyte. An open junction maintains full contact between the reference electrolyte and the sample while the polymer fill prevents the clogging that shortens the service life of traditional liquid-filled junctions — especially relevant when measuring high-TDS or particulate-bearing solutions.
The PH60 meter body is rated IP67 — fully dust-tight and submersible to 1 m — making it practical in wet grow environments. The large LCD displays pH and temperature simultaneously with three-color backlighting: blue during measurement, green during calibration, and red when readings exceed user-set alarm limits. That red-screen alert is useful on any floor where out-of-range pH needs immediate operator attention without having to read a number.
Calibration supports up to 3 points with automatic buffer recognition across five standard buffer values (1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01, and 12.45). The PH60-SA kit ships with premixed pH 4.00, 7.00, and 12.45 calibration buffers and soaking solution — the 12.45 buffer is specifically included because the LabSen 845 is optimized for the high end of the pH scale. The Apera CalPod solution organizer keeps buffers organized and accessible during calibration. Auto Temperature Compensation (ATC) runs continuously from 0–50°C, and the meter auto-shuts off after 8 minutes without operation to preserve battery life.
Operators running high-EC nutrient programs — particularly those using calcium-rich base nutrients, hard source water, or recirculating systems that concentrate salts over time — regularly encounter the conditions the PH60-SA was built for. A standard pH pen will drift or read inaccurately in solutions above roughly pH 10 or above 5,000 ppm TDS. Standard glass pH electrodes experience 'alkaline error' above roughly pH 10 — sodium and other alkali metal ions interfere with the glass membrane response, causing the meter to read lower than the actual pH. In high-salinity solutions, elevated ion concentrations create similar interference and can clog conventional reference junctions.
