The Matrix Temperature & Humidity Sensor connects to the Matrix MC5 lighting controller via a standard RJ12 jack. Once plugged in, it feeds continuous temperature and relative-humidity readings directly into the controller, which uses those values to calculate and display a live VPD figure and to execute any environment-based automation rules you've configured.
Without this sensor present, the MC5's environmental automation features are inoperative — the controller will not be able to trigger dimming changes, scheduling shifts, or any other response tied to room conditions. The MC5 will power on and control dimming and scheduling without the sensor, but all environmental automation features — including VPD display, temperature-triggered responses, and humidity-based logic — require the sensor to be connected. Without it, those features are disabled.
The sensor is compatible with the full Matrix lighting lineup managed by the MC5 controller, including both Matrix LED and Matrix Hybrid systems. The sensor communicates with the controller, not the fixture directly, so fixture type does not affect compatibility.
Matrix's controller ecosystem is purpose-built around its own sensor hardware and communication protocol. Third-party RJ12 sensors using different data formats will not be recognized by the MC5. Use the Matrix-designated sensor (this unit) to ensure correct readings and full feature access.
Position the sensor at or near canopy level in the grow zone the MC5 is managing. Mounting it at the controller's wall location — which may be several feet from the canopy and near HVAC returns or supply vents — will produce readings that don't reflect actual plant-zone conditions and will skew your VPD calculations.
