Plug-and-play RJ12 adapter that connects Sun System ballasts to TrolMaster Hydro-X control.
The TrolMaster LMA-13 Lighting Control Adapter S bridges Sun System ballasts (excluding the LEC 630) to the Hydro-X environmental control system, translating the controller's digital output into the analog low-voltage signal your Sun System ballasts expect. One adapter, RJ12 connection, no additional wiring harness required.
The LMA-13 is a ballast-specific lighting control adapter designed for use within TrolMaster's Hydro-X ecosystem. Most commercial ballasts support a low-voltage dimming input, but each manufacturer implements a different communication protocol. The LMA-13 converts the digital control signal from the Hydro-X controller into the analog signal format that Sun System ballasts use for dimming and on/off control.
Compatibility covers Sun System ballasts broadly — the one documented exception is the Sun System LEC 630, which uses a different control architecture and is not supported by this adapter. If you're running dual-bulb Sun System fixtures with individual two-knob control for each bulb, those units cannot be addressed by the Hydro-X through this adapter either. All other standard Sun System HID ballasts are supported.
Licensed cannabis and hemp cultivation operators who are already running Sun System ballasts and want to bring those fixtures under centralized, automated control via TrolMaster's Hydro-X platform. This is the enabling piece — without the correct LMA adapter, the Hydro-X controller has no way to communicate with your ballasts.
The LMA-13 fits operations that need to automate dimming schedules, coordinate lights with environmental triggers (CO2, temperature, humidity), or simply remove manual ballast adjustments from the daily workflow. It's equally applicable to a single-room cultivation space running an HCS-1 as it is to a larger footprint managed through an HCS-2 Pro or HCS-3 Plus.
The adapter converts the Hydro-X digital control signal to an analog output in the 0–11.5V range at up to 0.2A, which is the protocol Sun System ballasts use for low-voltage dimming. It ships with an integrated RJ12 cable (approximately 0.6 ft) and an RJ12 socket, so connecting it inline between the Hydro-X controller and the ballast's low-voltage input port is a straightforward plug-and-play installation.
A built-in LED power indicator confirms active connection status to the Hydro-X system — a small but practical detail when you're troubleshooting a rack of fixtures. The adapter is rated for operating environments up to 122°F and 90% relative humidity, appropriate for standard commercial grow room conditions.
TrolMaster structures the Hydro-X platform around a modular RJ12 bus architecture. The central controller (HCS-1, HCS-2 Pro, or HCS-3 Plus) manages the environment, and purpose-built adapters and device stations extend that control to specific equipment types. The LMA series covers lighting: each adapter in the line is tuned to a specific ballast manufacturer's low-voltage protocol, and the LMA-13 is the Sun System-specific unit.
If you're running multiple lighting zones or need to scale beyond a single adapter, TrolMaster's SPH-1 Splitter Hub can be used to expand the RJ12 bus and connect additional adapters. The LMA-13 installs on the lighting control port of the Hydro-X controller — both the HCS-1 and the HCS-2/HCS-3 offer two lighting control channels, giving operators the ability to run separate dimming profiles or schedules on each channel without adding a second controller.

The LMA-13 supports Sun System ballasts as a product line, with one documented exception: the Sun System LEC 630 is not compatible and cannot be controlled through this adapter. Additionally, dual-bulb Sun System fixtures with two separate knobs for independent bulb control cannot be addressed by the Hydro-X system through this adapter.
The LMA-13 connects to any controller in the TrolMaster Hydro-X lineup — the HCS-1 (Hydro-X), HCS-2 Pro (Hydro-X Pro), and HCS-3 Plus (Hydro-X Plus). TrolMaster's RJ12 bus architecture is consistent across all three controller tiers, so device stations and adapters like the LMA-13 are cross-compatible throughout the lineup.
One LMA-13 per lighting control channel on the Hydro-X controller. The Hydro-X controllers each offer two lighting control channels. To expand beyond that, TrolMaster's SPH-1 Splitter Hub can be used to connect additional adapters to the bus. Contact HSC for guidance on configuring larger ballast arrays.
No special wiring is required. The LMA-13 uses a plug-and-play RJ12 connection to the Hydro-X controller and connects to the Sun System ballast's low-voltage dimming input. The onboard LED indicator confirms active communication with the controller once connected. Dimming schedules and setpoints are then configured within the Hydro-X controller interface or app.
No. The LMA-13 is specifically engineered for the analog communication protocol used by Sun System ballasts. TrolMaster makes separate LMA adapters for other ballast brands — for example, the LMA-12 for Dimlux and the LMA-11 for Phantom LP. Using the wrong adapter for a given ballast brand will result in communication errors or no control signal. Contact HSC to confirm the correct adapter for your specific fixtures.
