Lab-grade direct-soil pH testing built for working grow rooms — soil, coco, rockwool, and nutrient solution.
The Apera GroStar GS2 (AI102G) is a lab-grade soil pH pen tester designed specifically for commercial horticulture, capable of direct in-media pH testing across soil, coco coir, rockwool, and nutrient solution. Its Swiss-made LabSen® replaceable spear probe and PTFE-ring junction protection set it apart from standard liquid-only pH pens on the grow room floor.
The Apera GroStar GS2 (SKU: AI102G) is a Gen II premium pen tester purpose-built for direct pH measurement in soil, coco coir, rockwool, and other solid grow media, as well as nutrient solution. Unlike a standard flat or bulb-tip pH probe designed only for liquid, the GS2 ships with a Swiss LabSen® spear-tip electrode engineered to penetrate grow media directly — no slurry prep, no sample extraction. For operators running mixed media rooms or rotating between soil and hydro benches, one instrument handles both environments.
Apera Instruments has been producing lab-grade measurement tools since 1991. The GroStar line is their dedicated horticulture-market series, engineered around the realities of a production grow: dark environments, multiple testing locations per shift, outdoor or greenhouse humidity, and the abrasive wear that direct soil contact puts on conventional glass-bulb probes.
Any licensed cannabis or hemp operator running soil, amended coco, or rockwool propagation benefits from a dedicated soil pH pen. Tissue culture and clone rooms, living-soil outdoor beds, greenhouse transplant staging, and direct-to-container craft programs all require in-media readings that a standard nutrient-solution pen cannot reliably deliver. The GS2 handles all of those scenarios.
It also fits QA workflows where a technician needs to walk a facility and log pH from multiple containers or beds in sequence. The TruRead measurement mode captures readings across multiple sample locations and automatically calculates average, minimum, and maximum values — useful for identifying hot spots or pH drift across a large canopy without manual math. The 3-color backlit LCD (white in measurement mode, green in calibration, red on calibration error) keeps readings legible in dimly lit flower rooms.
The standout engineering on the GS2 is the Swiss LabSen® spear probe. The impact-resistant spear glass tip is rated 10 times stronger than a conventional glass bulb, which matters when you're pressing a probe into amended soil or compacted rockwool slabs repeatedly across a shift. A PTFE ring at the junction prevents soil particles from clogging the reference electrode — the primary failure mode of standard flat-tip probes used in direct-media applications. The probe is fully replaceable (SKU: AI802G), so when it reaches end of life you replace the consumable, not the instrument.
Calibration runs automatic 1-to-3 point using pH 4.00, 7.00, and 10.01 buffers (pH 7 and pH 4 solutions included in kit; pH 10.01 sold separately). The electrode condition display tells you the state of the probe at calibration time so you know whether to trust the reading or swap the probe. Automatic temperature compensation covers 0–50°C (32–122°F). The body is IP67 rated — submersible and fully dustproof. Power comes from 4-AAA batteries with auto-off to extend runtime.
For operations spec'ing out a full environmental and media monitoring stack, the GS2 slots in as the dedicated in-media pH tool alongside a separate nutrient-solution EC/pH combo pen for reservoir and fertigation line checks. Because the spear probe is cross-compatible with the GroStar GS1 and GS4 platforms, facilities that already run other GroStar meters can standardize on a single replacement probe SKU across instruments.
The included kit covers everything needed for commissioning: pH 7.00 and pH 4.00 calibration solutions (50 mL each), 3M KCl soaking solution (10 mL), a probe cleaning brush, a hole dibber for piloting insertion points in hard or compacted media without risking the spear tip, lanyard, and user manual. Warranty coverage is 2 years on the instrument and 1 year on the probe — above average for a pen-class instrument at this tier.

The GS2 requires adequate soil moisture for accurate readings — dry soil produces unstable or inaccurate results. For hard or compacted media, use the included hole dibber to create a pilot hole before inserting the spear tip to avoid probe damage. Pre-moistening dry soil before testing is recommended per Apera's guidance.
Standard pH pens use a conventional glass bulb designed for liquid immersion. The GS2's LabSen® spear probe has an impact-resistant tip rated 10× stronger than conventional glass bulbs, plus a PTFE ring at the junction that prevents soil particles from clogging the reference electrode — the primary failure point when a liquid-only probe is used in solid media.
Yes. The GS2-E replacement soil spear pH probe (SKU: AI802G) is sold separately and is also cross-compatible with the GroStar GS1 and GS4 platforms. You replace only the probe at end of life, not the full instrument.
TruRead mode lets you take readings from multiple sample locations in sequence. The pen automatically tracks and displays the average, minimum, and maximum pH values across all readings in that session — useful for auditing pH consistency across a large soil bed, multiple containers, or a propagation tray without manually logging each reading.
The GS2 supports automatic 1-to-3-point calibration using pH 4.00, 7.00, and 10.01 buffers. pH 7.00 and pH 4.00 calibration solutions (50 mL each) are included in the kit. pH 10.01 solution is sold separately if 3-point calibration is needed.
