The Apera GroStar GS1 (AI101G) is a second-generation pH and temperature pen tester in Apera's horticulture-specific GroStar lineup. Apera Instruments has been producing lab-grade electrochemical measurement instruments since 1991, and the GroStar series reflects that engineering background applied specifically to growing environments — where splashback, dim lighting, and repeated daily use are the norm, not the exception.
The GS1 measures pH and temperature simultaneously via a single probe. The probe itself is built around a double-junction reference system with a blue gel inner electrolyte and lithium glass membrane — a construction that reduces contamination cross-over between the reference junction and sample, which extends both probe life and reading consistency over time. When the probe eventually reaches end-of-life, it swaps out independently; the instrument body is reused. The full kit includes pH 7.00 and pH 4.00 calibration buffer solutions (50 mL each), KCL storage solution (10 mL), lanyard, and user manual — everything needed to put it into service on day one.
Any licensed cannabis or hemp cultivation operation that manually spot-checks nutrient solution pH needs a reliable handheld meter. The GS1 is particularly well-suited to multi-room or multi-facility operations where a technician moves through several zones per shift — the IP67 waterproof rating handles reservoir splashback, and the 3-color backlit LCD remains readable in dark bloom rooms without adjusting grow-light schedules.
It's also appropriate as a bench-check backup alongside inline or continuous pH monitoring systems. Inline sensors drift; a well-maintained calibrated handheld gives you the independent reference point to catch sensor drift before it causes a nutrient lockout event. For smaller cultivators or those scaling up who aren't yet running inline monitoring, the GS1 covers daily solution checks in hydro, coco, or any liquid nutrient application. Double-junction probe with blue gel electrolyte and sensor shield: The anti-contamination double-junction architecture prevents sample solution from back-migrating into the reference, which is the primary failure mode for cheaper single-junction pens used in high-nutrient solutions. The protective sensor shield adds physical durability to the glass membrane.
TruRead measurement mode: When moving through multiple sample points — reservoirs, run-off trays, fertigation lines — TruRead records each stabilized reading and automatically calculates the average, minimum, and maximum across all readings taken in that session. Useful for establishing baseline variability across a system rather than relying on a single spot-check.
2-point automatic calibration with electrode condition display: The meter walks through pH 7.00 then pH 4.00 calibration automatically and displays electrode condition so you know before you start whether the probe still has usable life — not after you've already taken a set of readings.
3-color backlit LCD and IP67 waterproofing: The backlight shifts color with reading mode for at-a-glance status in low-light environments. The IP67 rating means the unit survives full submersion — a non-negotiable for reservoir-side use. Powered by standard AAA batteries with auto-off to conserve power between checks.
In a commercial cultivation setting, pH management is one of the highest-frequency daily tasks — and one of the most consequential. A reading error or a drift in calibration that goes undetected for 24–48 hours can compromise a full room's nutrient uptake window, particularly in late vegetative or early flower when feed programs are most dialed. The probe is independently replaceable. When the probe reaches end of life, you swap it out and keep the instrument body. Replacement GroStar probes are available through HSC — contact us when you're within a few weeks of needing one so there's no gap in your testing workflow.
The GS1 calibrates to pH 7.00 and pH 4.00 buffer points. The kit ships with 50 mL bottles of each solution plus a 10 mL KCL storage solution for probe maintenance. Replacement buffer solution kits are available separately.
Yes. The GS1 measures pH in any aqueous solution — reservoir nutrient solution, fertigation run-off, and media leachate. For direct in-media testing (soil, coco, rockwool) without first making a slurry, the GroStar GS2 (AI102G) with its spear probe is the more appropriate tool.
TruRead records each stabilized measurement as you move through multiple sample points, then automatically displays the average, minimum, and maximum of the full set. It's useful when you're sampling multiple reservoirs or multiple run-off collection points in a single walkthrough and want to see the spread, not just individual spot readings.
IP67 means the unit is rated for submersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Accidental drops into a reservoir won't destroy the meter. That said, the unit is a precision instrument — recover it promptly, rinse with clean water, and store the probe in KCL solution per normal maintenance protocol.
