What the X5 Is

The Flexstar X5 is a dual-channel smart lighting controller built for commercial-scale indoor and greenhouse grows. Each of its two independent channels can drive up to 100 Flexstar fixtures or ballasts, giving a single X5 unit command over up to 200 lights — enough for a full multi-tier or multi-room deployment without stacking controllers.

The controller supports both LED and HID (including double-ended HID) fixture types, making it a practical retrofit option for facilities transitioning lamp technologies or running mixed rooms. Communication runs via RS485 and 0-10V protocols, both industry-standard signaling methods already present in most commercial grow infrastructures.

On top of lighting control, the X5 integrates environmental monitoring: temperature, humidity, VPD, and CO₂ are displayed live on the touchscreen panel. This puts the critical numbers a head grower checks hourly directly alongside the lighting controls — no switching between devices or apps.

Who It's Built For

The X5 targets licensed cannabis and hemp operators running multi-room or multi-tier canopies where manual dimmer adjustments and timer switches create inconsistency between rooms and cycles. Spectrum tuning is the X5's most operationally significant feature for licensed cannabis grows. On compatible Flexstar LED fixtures, UV and far-red channels are independently addressable — operators can define spectrum ratios per growth stage rather than running a fixed full-spectrum output from clone to harvest. This lets cultivation teams implement targeted far-red end-of-day signals or UV exposure windows without external supplemental fixtures.

Scheduling runs in both manual and automated cycle-pattern modes. Manual mode is straightforward for single-cycle rooms; cycle-pattern mode handles staggered light schedules for facilities running multiple harvest rotations simultaneously. Each channel operates its schedule independently, so channel one can run an 18/6 veg cycle while channel two runs a 12/12 flower cycle.

The auto-dim and auto-shutdown functions act as a thermal safety layer: if ambient temperature exceeds the configured threshold, the controller automatically reduces output or shuts down fixtures to protect the crop. For sealed or partially sealed rooms where heat buildup is a known risk during peak summer loads, this is a meaningful operational safeguard beyond what a standard timer-and-dimmer setup provides.

How It Fits a Commercial Build

In a purpose-built or retrofit commercial facility, the X5 typically installs at the head of each grow zone, wired into the fixture daisy-chain via RS485 or 0-10V run. The dual-channel architecture means a single X5 can cover two distinct zones — common configurations pair one channel per room in a two-room suite, or split a large single room into independently controlled halves for micro-climate management.

The environmental readout (temp, humidity, VPD, CO₂) is pulled from sensors connected to the unit and displayed on the controller's touchscreen. This makes the X5 a lightweight environmental dashboard for rooms where a full climate controller isn't yet integrated — growers get actionable data at the light panel without a separate handheld meter.
