Temperature-driven variable fan control with independent day/night setpoints — one controller, two modes.
The TrolMaster Beta-2 is a digital day/night fan speed controller that automatically modulates variable-speed fans between 25–100% output based on live canopy temperature readings. Independent day and night setpoints, a built-in photocell, and a 16 ft remote temperature sensor let you dial in precise airflow for each phase of your light cycle without manual adjustments.
The TrolMaster Beta-2 is a standalone digital fan speed controller designed for variable-speed inline and exhaust fans in enclosed cultivation spaces. It reads ambient temperature through a remote sensor and continuously adjusts fan output to hold your target setpoint — when temperature climbs above the setpoint, the unit ramps fan output to 100%; when temperature falls to a defined cut-off threshold, it shuts the fan down entirely. Between those two boundaries, the controller maintains your programmed speed percentage, keeping airflow consistent without constant manual intervention.
This is temperature-reactive speed control at its most practical: no complicated networking required, no hub dependency, no subscription. The Beta-2 operates as a self-contained unit — plug it into a standard 120V outlet, connect your fan, position the sensor, and program your setpoints through the front-panel LED interface.
One of the Beta-2's core features is its built-in photocell sensor. The controller automatically detects whether lights are on or off and switches between independently programmed day and night settings without any timer wiring or external signal. This matters in a commercial room because day-cycle heat loads from lighting are fundamentally different from overnight conditions — running the same fan speed through both phases wastes energy during lights-off and may under-cool during peak day temperatures.
With the Beta-2, you program a day temperature setpoint, a day fan speed baseline, a night temperature setpoint, and a night fan speed baseline separately. The photocell handles the transition automatically. You get two distinct climate profiles from one controller, with zero manual switching between them.
The Beta-2 is rated for 120V AC input with a 6A/250V fuse. The connected fan load should not exceed 4.5A to avoid inrush current issues at startup — operators running higher-draw fans should verify their fan's rated amperage before connecting. The output switch uses a triac for smooth, stepless speed modulation rather than relay switching, which is appropriate for variable-speed fan motors.
The included remote temperature sensor ships with a 16 ft cable, giving you enough reach to position the probe at canopy level rather than at the controller's mounting point — critical for accurate readings in a multi-tier or tall canopy environment. The LED display supports both Fahrenheit and Celsius readout, switchable via the front-panel buttons. No additional sensors, software, or hubs are required for standalone operation.
The Beta-2 is well-suited for rooms where HVAC handles the primary cooling load and inline or exhaust fans handle supplemental airflow, CO2 circulation, and environmental buffering. It is also a practical standalone solution for ancillary spaces — drying rooms, mother rooms, veg corridors, and propagation tents — where a full climate control system is over-specified but unmanaged fan operation isn't acceptable.
For multi-room facilities already running TrolMaster's Hydro-X or Aqua-X networked systems, the Beta-2 sits in the Legacy Beta Series as a dedicated single-zone unit. It is not network-integrated with the Hydro-X platform, so operators looking for centralized multi-zone control should evaluate TrolMaster's controller ecosystem accordingly. For single-zone applications where simplicity, reliability, and repeatable temperature-driven fan control are the priority, the Beta-2 is a proven, field-tested choice.

The Beta-2 is designed for variable-speed fans rated at 120V AC with a load not exceeding 4.5A. It uses triac-based output, which is compatible with most standard inline and exhaust fans used in cultivation environments. Fixed-speed or non-variable motors will not benefit from speed modulation. Always verify your fan's rated amperage before connecting — some fans have high inrush current that can trip the 6A fuse even if the running current is within spec.
No. The Beta-2 has a built-in photocell that detects ambient light levels directly. It automatically switches between your day and night setpoints when it senses the light cycle change in the room. No additional timer, relay, or signal wiring is required.
When the measured temperature rises above your programmed setpoint, the Beta-2 automatically outputs 100% power to the fan to maximize cooling. Once temperature drops back to or below the setpoint, the controller returns to your programmed baseline speed. If temperature drops below the cut-off setpoint you've configured, the fan shuts off entirely.
The Beta-2 is part of TrolMaster's Legacy Beta Series and operates as a standalone unit. It is not network-integrated with the Hydro-X or Aqua-X platforms. Operators running centralized TrolMaster climate control systems who want fan speed integrated into that ecosystem should review TrolMaster's device station and sensor module options within the Hydro-X line.
The Beta-2 is programmed via front-panel HOME, UP, and DOWN buttons. Cycling through the HOME button steps accesses the cut-off temperature setpoint, day temperature setpoint, day fan speed percentage, night temperature setpoint, and night fan speed percentage in sequence. The LED display shows the current value for each parameter as you scroll through settings.
