CocoCore 50L 70% Coco 30% Perlite

Pre-blended 70/30 loose-fill substrate built for commercial drip and run-to-waste systems.

CocoCore 50L 70/30 is a ready-to-use loose-fill substrate blending 70% buffered coco coir with 30% perlite — dialed in for commercial cannabis and hemp production where root-zone oxygen, consistent drainage, and repeatable feed programs are non-negotiable.

What It Is

CocoCore 50L 70/30 is a pre-blended, loose-fill soilless substrate composed of 70% buffered coconut coir and 30% perlite, packaged in a 50-liter bag ready to fill containers directly. The coir fraction provides high cation exchange capacity and water retention, while the perlite fraction increases macro-porosity, improving drainage rates and keeping the root zone aerated between irrigation events.

The blend arrives pre-buffered and low-EC, meaning the coir has been treated to displace naturally occurring potassium and sodium ions with calcium — reducing nutrient lockout risk when running calcium-forward feed programs, which is standard practice in commercial coco cultivation. Starting EC is kept low so growers feed to their own program from day one without fighting residual salt load from the substrate itself.

Who It's For

CocoCore 70/30 is spec'd for commercial indoor cannabis and hemp operators running drip-to-waste, Dutch bucket, or hand-watered container systems where irrigation frequency and drain-back rates are controlled. The 30% perlite loading makes it particularly well-suited for high-frequency fertigation — multiple irrigation events per day — because the increased porosity prevents the oxygen debt that can accumulate in straight-coco substrates under aggressive schedules.

It's also a practical choice for operations standardizing across multiple strains or canopy tiers that want a single substrate SKU with predictable behavior rather than batch-to-batch variation from on-site blending. Multi-site and multi-state operators benefit from a consistent, commercial-grade loose-fill that behaves the same room to room and run to run.

Key Performance Characteristics

The 70/30 ratio is the industry benchmark for aggressive-feeding cannabis programs. The coir component retains enough moisture to keep the root zone hydrated between feeds without waterlogging, while the perlite component opens drainage channels and raises the air-filled porosity of the medium. The result is a substrate that tolerates high-frequency drip irrigation without drowning the root zone, and that drains clean enough to give you reliable drain-fraction data when dialing in feed concentration.

Because coco coir has a naturally near-neutral pH in the 5.8–6.5 range, the substrate is compatible with both mineral and organic-mineral hybrid nutrient programs without significant pH correction at fill. Pre-buffering with calcium further stabilizes nutrient availability from transplant forward. The substrate is also pathogen-free and inert — it brings no biology of its own, so your microbial program (if you run one) starts with a clean slate.

How It Fits Your Build

At 50 liters per bag, CocoCore 70/30 scales cleanly across common container formats used in commercial cannabis: 3-gallon, 5-gallon, 7-gallon, and 10-gallon fabric or hard-sided pots. Calculate fill volume per container, multiply by plant count, and order in pallet quantities through HSC to cover a full room or facility buildout.

For run-to-waste drip systems, the substrate's drainage characteristics support the 10–25% drain-fraction targets most commercial coco programs use to flush excess salt and prevent media EC creep over a grow cycle. For operations using rolling bench or vertical rack systems — especially where irrigation automation is already in place — CocoCore 70/30 integrates into the build without complicating the feed schedule. Contact HSC to coordinate volume, pallet count, and scheduling to match your next fill date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does CocoCore 70/30 need to be pre-soaked or re-hydrated before use?

No. The loose-fill format ships with sufficient moisture content to be used directly from the bag. Unlike compressed coir bricks, there is no re-hydration step — fill your containers, transplant, and begin your feed program. If bags have been stored for extended periods in dry conditions, a light pre-wet before filling is good practice but not required under normal storage.

Does the pre-buffering mean I skip CalMag in my feed program?

No — pre-buffering reduces the substrate's initial tendency to strip calcium and magnesium from your feed solution, but coco coir still requires calcium and magnesium supplementation throughout the grow cycle. Pre-buffering gives you a more stable starting point, but your nutrient program should still include adequate CalMag, particularly in early vegetative stages and during heavy feeding in flower.

How many bags do I need per 1,000 sq ft of canopy?

It depends on container size. At 5-gallon containers with roughly 4 plants per square meter, a 1,000 sq ft room running approximately 370 plants needs about 37 bags minimum at 50L each — before accounting for headspace and any top-dressing. HSC can help you calculate exact pallet quantities based on your container spec, plant density, and room count. Request a quote with your room dimensions and container format.

Can this substrate be reused across multiple grow cycles?

Coco coir can be reconditioned between cycles — typically flushed, sterilized, and re-buffered — but commercial operations generally run fresh substrate each cycle to eliminate pathogen carryover risk and maintain consistent media structure. Whether you recondition or run fresh depends on your SOPs, IPM program, and risk tolerance. CocoCore 70/30 is priced and packaged for commercial single-cycle throughput.

Is this substrate compatible with automated drip and fertigation systems?

Yes. The 30% perlite content is specifically what makes 70/30 blends the preferred substrate for automated drip and run-to-waste systems. The increased macro-porosity allows frequent irrigation events without oxygen depletion in the root zone, and the blend drains consistently enough to give reliable drain-fraction readings when dialing in fertigation timing and EC targets.
