Benchtop Lab pH Meter for Viscous Liquid Samples e.g. Coatings, Skincare Products, Syrups, Sugarcane Juice, etc.

Lab-grade pH measurement for viscous, high-alkalinity, and high-temp samples—up to 100 °C.

The Apera PH700-VS (AI5016) is a benchtop lab pH meter purpose-built for viscous liquid samples—extracts, concentrates, coatings, syrups, honey, and sugarcane juice—paired with the Swiss-made LabSen 853-H pH/Temp. electrode featuring a pre-pressurized reference system that maintains stable electrolyte flow even in thick, high-viscosity matrices where standard electrodes clog and drift.

What It Is

The Apera PH700-VS is a dedicated benchtop pH meter for samples that defeat standard combination electrodes: viscous liquids, high-salinity solutions, strongly alkaline matrices, and high-temperature fluids up to 100 °C. The meter itself is the same proven PH700 platform—±0.01 pH accuracy, 0–14.00 pH range, 0.1/0.01 pH resolution, and IP54 splash-proof/dust-proof construction—but the AI5016 SKU ships it pre-configured with the LabSen 853-H electrode specifically selected for viscous sample work.

The LabSen 853-H is manufactured using proprietary Swiss sensor technology and materials. Its HA-type glass membrane minimizes alkali error in strongly basic solutions (particularly in the pH 10–14 range), and the hemispherical membrane geometry is documented to be up to 10× more shock-resistant than conventional flat-tip glass. A blue-gel non-flowing inner solution eliminates air-bubble formation during measurement—a common failure mode in refillable electrodes used with thick samples.

The Pre-Pressurized Reference System — Why It Matters for Viscous Samples

With a standard electrode, immersing the junction in a high-viscosity liquid (paste, syrup, extract, resin, coating) creates back-pressure that slows or stops electrolyte flow through the reference junction. The result is a drifting, unstable, or completely unusable reading. The LabSen 853-H solves this at the hardware level: the electrode body is pre-pressurized so electrolyte continues to flow uniformly through the junction regardless of sample viscosity, producing stable, repeatable readings.

The silver-ion trap reference system adds another layer of protection—it prevents inward contamination of the reference electrolyte from sample ions, which extends electrode service life and preserves junction integrity across repeated measurements in process or QC lab environments. The integrated temperature sensor (30 kΩ NTC) connects via RCA to the PH700 meter and enables automatic temperature compensation (ATC) from 0–100 °C without a separate temperature probe.

Meter Features & Lab Workflow

Calibration runs 1–3 points using auto-recognition of standard buffer solutions (pH 4.00, 7.00, 10.01 are included premixed in the kit, 50 mL each). Self-diagnosis during calibration displays electrode condition and slope—so you know immediately if the electrode needs replacement before running a batch of samples, not after. Max/Min reading mode lets operators track measurement drift or peak values across a measurement window without manually logging every data point.

The PH700 stores up to 50 data sets onboard—adequate for shift-level QC logging before export. The IP54 rating means connectors and housing are protected against bench-level splashes and dust intrusion; silicone seal caps on the connectors extend reliability in humid or wet lab environments. The kit includes a simple electrode holder accommodating up to two electrodes, making it straightforward to keep a second electrode staged for a different sample type without reconfiguring the bench setup.

Application Fit for Cannabis & Hemp Operations

Commercial cannabis and hemp operators routinely need accurate pH data on sample types that fall outside what a standard water-solution electrode handles well: concentrate oils, extraction solvents at elevated temperature, sugar-rich media additives, nutrient syrups, and post-process formulations with high viscosity or high alkalinity. A standard 201T-F electrode in those matrices generates unreliable readings—or fails entirely. The PH700-VS kit addresses this directly with an electrode matched to the chemistry.

For facilities that also run water-solution testing (nutrient feed water, reverse osmosis, reservoir pH), the PH700 meter platform supports other LabSen electrode variants, so the same meter body can serve multiple testing stations with the appropriate electrode swapped in. This makes the PH700-VS a practical anchor instrument for a production lab that handles diverse sample types across a cultivation, extraction, or post-harvest operation. Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my operation need a viscous-sample electrode rather than a standard lab pH electrode?

Standard combination electrodes rely on passive electrolyte diffusion through the reference junction. In viscous samples—concentrates, syrups, extracts, pastes—the sample's viscosity creates back-pressure that slows or stops that flow, causing unstable or inaccurate readings and accelerated junction clogging. The LabSen 853-H's pre-pressurized reference system maintains electrolyte flow regardless of sample viscosity, producing stable, reliable readings where a standard electrode would drift or fail.

Can the PH700-VS meter be used with other electrodes for water-solution testing?

Yes. The PH700 meter platform uses standard BNC (pH) and RCA (temperature) connectors and is compatible with the full range of Apera LabSen electrodes. You can pair the meter body with a different LabSen variant optimized for water solutions, wastewater, low-ionic-strength water, or other sample types. The AI5016 kit is configured specifically with the 853-H for viscous-sample work.

What buffer solutions does the auto-calibration recognize?

The PH700 auto-calibration recognizes six standard buffer options: pH 1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01, and 12.45. The AI5016 kit includes premixed solutions at pH 4.00, 7.00, and 10.01 (50 mL each). Calibration runs 1–3 points with self-diagnosis and slope display so you can assess electrode condition before measuring.

Does the LabSen 853-H electrode have an integrated temperature sensor?

Yes. The 853-H includes an integrated 30 kΩ NTC temperature sensor that connects via the RCA connector on the PH700 meter, enabling automatic temperature compensation (ATC) from 0–100 °C. Unlike some other LabSen viscous-sample electrodes (e.g., the 851-series), the 853-H does not require a separate temperature probe for ATC.

What is the warranty on the PH700-VS kit?

Apera covers the PH700 meter instrument for two years from delivery against defects in material and workmanship. The LabSen 853-H electrode carries a six-month warranty. Warranty does not cover damage from improper use, unauthorized modifications, or external causes. Contact HSC for warranty service coordination.
