Lab-grade benchtop pH accuracy engineered for strong alkaline and high-salinity solution testing.
The Apera PH700-SA (AI5011) is a benchtop lab pH meter purpose-built for nutrient and solution chemistry that pushes past pH 12 or exceeds 5,000 ppm salinity — conditions that routinely corrupt readings on standard electrodes. At its core is the Swiss-engineered LabSen 843 pH/Temperature electrode with a proprietary HA-type glass membrane specifically designed to minimize alkaline measurement error where general-purpose probes fall apart.
The Apera PH700-SA is a benchtop laboratory pH meter built around the LabSen 843 combination pH/temperature electrode — a Swiss-sourced sensor with a proprietary HA-type glass membrane engineered specifically for strong alkaline solutions (pH greater than 12) and high-salinity solutions exceeding 0.5% or 5,000 ppm. It is the purpose-built variant of Apera's PH700 benchtop platform, differing from the standard AI501 model in one critical way: the electrode.
The LabSen 843's HA membrane reduces alkaline measurement error caused by sodium ion interference — the primary failure mode of conventional pH glass in high-pH or high-ionic-strength environments. A proprietary blue gel electrolyte replaces liquid fill, eliminating air bubbles inside the sensor and allowing accurate readings even when the probe is not held perfectly vertical. A silver ion trap built into the reference system prevents junction clog and extends electrode service life compared to standard ceramic-junction designs.
The meter body itself is the same reliable PH700 platform: IP54-rated splash- and dust-proof housing, large backlit LCD, automatic temperature compensation from 0–100 °C, and a 50-set onboard data store. The kit ships ready to use, with a dual-electrode holder and three pre-mixed calibration solutions (pH 4.00, 7.00, and 12.45) matched to the alkaline application.
Commercial cannabis and hemp cultivation operations running high-pH nutrient programs, alkaline substrate flushes, or calcium/magnesium-heavy feed regimens will encounter readings above pH 12 during mixing, pH-up correction, or cleaning-solution verification. Standard pH electrodes — including most probes sold with entry-level benchtop meters — are not designed for sustained contact with strong alkaline or high-salinity matrices and will drift, produce error-biased readings, or fail prematurely.
This meter is also well suited for tissue-culture and propagation labs working with alkaline sterilization or buffer solutions, post-harvest processing teams verifying rinse or wash solution chemistry, and QA/QC staff who test nutrient concentrate stock solutions before dilution. Any cultivation team that has had to throw out or discount a pH reading because they suspected electrode error in a high-pH or high-EC sample has a direct use case for the PH700-SA.
It functions equally well for routine daily pH measurement of general water-based nutrient solutions, so it does not need to be a dedicated instrument for extreme samples only — it replaces a standard benchtop meter and simply handles the edge cases that a standard meter cannot.
The LabSen 843 electrode is the defining component. Its HA-type glass membrane is designed and sourced from Switzerland and is rated for strong alkaline solutions from pH 10–14 and high-salinity solutions above 5,000 ppm. The membrane is reported to be ten times more structurally robust than traditional pH glass. The blue gel inner electrolyte does not flow, which eliminates air bubble formation — a common source of measurement instability — and allows the electrode to operate accurately in any orientation.
The meter platform delivers 1-to-3-point automatic calibration with self-diagnosis and electrode condition display. Calibration recognizes pH buffers at 4.00, 7.00, and 12.45 — with 12.45 included specifically because of the alkaline application. A Max/Min reading mode captures peak and trough values over a measurement window, useful for monitoring solution mixing or chemical addition events. Fifty data sets can be stored onboard without a computer or USB connection.
The IP54-rated enclosure protects the electronics from bench-environment splashes and particulate. All connectors are protected by silicone seal caps. Automatic temperature compensation (ATC) runs continuously from 0 to 100 °C, ensuring that temperature swings in the sample — common in heated reservoirs or freshly mixed nutrient concentrates — do not introduce reading drift. Warranty coverage is two years on the instrument and six months on the electrode.
Cultivation operations at scale — whether running coco, rockwool, NFT, or living soil — maintain chemistry logs as part of standard operating procedure and, in licensed cannabis markets, often as a compliance requirement. A benchtop meter is the lab-grade reference instrument that portable pen testers and inline sensors are calibrated against. Accuracy and electrode integrity matter more at the benchtop than anywhere else in the QA chain.
The PH700-SA is particularly well positioned for operations that use alkaline cleaning or sterilization protocols between crop cycles, where testing cleaning solutions with a standard electrode degrades it quickly. By keeping a dedicated alkaline-rated meter at the bench, teams preserve the integrity of their primary reference instrument while also gaining the capability to verify extreme-pH chemistry accurately.
HSC supplies this meter nationally to licensed cannabis and hemp operations. It pairs directly with Apera's broader ecosystem of calibration standards, replacement electrodes, and conductivity meters — allowing procurement teams to consolidate instrumentation across a single brand with a consistent calibration workflow. Conventional pH glass membranes are susceptible to sodium ion error in high-pH environments — sodium ions behave similarly to hydrogen ions at the glass surface, causing the meter to read a lower pH than the actual value. This alkaline error becomes significant above pH 12. The LabSen 843's HA-type glass membrane is specifically engineered to minimize this interference, producing accurate readings in solutions up to pH 14.
It handles the full 0–14 pH range with ±0.01 accuracy, so it works perfectly well for daily nutrient solution checks, irrigation water verification, and any other general water-based measurement. The LabSen 843 electrode is rated for general water solutions in addition to its strong-alkaline and high-salinity capabilities. There is no performance trade-off in the normal operating range.
Apera specifies the LabSen 843 as designed for high-salinity solutions exceeding 0.5% (or approximately 5,000 ppm). Operations running concentrated nutrient stock tanks, salt-heavy curing or processing rinses, or high-EC fertigation programs that test solution concentrates before dilution fall into this category.
The meter supports 1-to-3-point automatic calibration and recognizes pH buffers at 4.00, 7.00, and 12.45. The 12.45 buffer is included in the kit and is critical for validating electrode accuracy at the high end of the pH scale — where the alkaline application demands it. Self-diagnosis and electrode condition display confirm that calibration has been performed correctly.
