Athena Roots Culture Media is the rooting-stage medium in Athena's Culture Line — a purpose-built tissue culture system designed for licensed cannabis and hemp operators who need a clean, standardized propagation workflow. The medium ships as a dry, pre-measured sachet. To prepare: tear open, dissolve in RO water to the 125 ml line, shake until fully dissolved, sterilize in an autoclave, pour into culture vessels, and insert explant material under a flow hood. No custom measuring, no weighing, no compounding from raw salts.
The Roots formula is specifically staged for the rooting phase of the tissue culture cycle — after explants have been established and multiplied in Shoots media, they transfer into Roots media for root initiation before hardening off and transitioning to conventional grow media. Color-coded packaging (red) makes Roots easy to distinguish from Shoots media in a working lab environment.

Explants come out of Shoots Media (where they were established and multiplied) and transfer into Roots Media to initiate root development. Once rooted plantlets are stable, they move to conventional hardening and transplant protocols in your existing production system.

They target different stages of the tissue culture cycle. Shoots Media is used for the establishment and multiplication stage — encouraging new shoot growth and replication of genetic material. Roots Media is used in the subsequent rooting stage, supporting callus formation and root initiation before the culture is ready to transfer to conventional grow media. Most programs use both in sequence.
The media is formulated for use with autoclave sterilization and laminar flow hood prep — if your lab already has a compatible autoclave (minimum sufficient to sterilize a 125 ml vessel) and a HEPA flow hood, the media can be used with that existing equipment. Athena designed their Culture Line components (autoclave, flow hood, vessels) as an integrated system, and those tools are optimized for this media, but operators with equivalent lab equipment can adapt the protocol.
Tissue culture propagation — when executed correctly from indexed, clean plant material under sterile conditions — is one of the tools operators use to establish HLV-clean starting stock. Athena's Culture Line procedure is designed to work with clean, verified explant material. Roots Media is the rooting-stage consumable in that process. It does not itself remediate infected plant material; clean source genetics and proper sterile technique are prerequisites.
