Aqua-X Controller with Water Detector set, Free SmartPhone App

30-zone irrigation and fertigation control with pH/EC monitoring and mobile alerts.

TrolMaster Aqua-X (NFS-1) is the central controller of TrolMaster's modular Aqua-X irrigation platform — managing up to 30 individual outputs (24V solenoid valves or 120V pumps), monitoring nutrient pH, EC, and water temperature, and delivering real-time alerts and historical data through the free TrolMaster smartphone app.

What the Aqua-X NFS-1 Is

The TrolMaster Aqua-X NFS-1 is the main controller — the brain — of TrolMaster's Aqua-X irrigation control system. It is a professional-grade, fully modular irrigation and fertigation controller built for multi-zone commercial grow environments. The NFS-1 manages up to 30 individual outputs by pairing with up to five control modules: the OA6-24 (24V solenoid valve board, 6 outputs each), the OA6-110 (120V pump board, 6 outputs each), and the DSP-1 program device station. Combined applications across board types are supported, capped at 30 total outputs per set.

The included WD-1 water detector provides both leak alerting and watering confirmation — giving the controller a closed-loop check that irrigation events actually fired and reached the target zone. Up to 30 water detectors can be daisy-chained to a single NFS-1 for large facilities. The controller ships with an LCD display and six-button interface for on-unit configuration, and connects to the internet via a standard CAT5/RJ45 cable for full app-based remote access.

Who This Controller Is For

The NFS-1 is sized for licensed cannabis and hemp operations running multiple rooms, multiple nutrient programs, or multiple grow zones off a single controller. If your facility runs solenoid-valved drip systems, flood tables, or multiple pump-fed zones, and you need to manage them on independent schedules with nutrient-level monitoring, the Aqua-X NFS-1 is the entry point into TrolMaster's irrigation automation platform.

It is equally relevant to operators running Dosatron or inline dosing systems who need programmatic timer control with nutrient data logging — and to any grow team that has outgrown simple analog timers and needs per-zone schedule flexibility, mobile visibility, and auditable irrigation history. Operators already running TrolMaster Hydro-X climate controllers will find the Aqua-X fits naturally into the same app ecosystem and network infrastructure.

Key Features and Control Capabilities

Zone scheduling is flexible: timers can be configured as recycling (interval-based) or time-of-day schedule timers, with up to 12 individual, independently customizable irrigation schedules. On-time resolution is as fine as 1 second; off-time resolution is as fine as 1 minute — enough granularity to dial in precise fertigation pulses for coco coir or rockwool production.

The optional AMP-2 sensor board (one per set) connects pH and EC/temperature sensors so the NFS-1 can monitor and log nutrient solution quality in real time. Up to eight Water Content Sensors (WCS-1) can be connected to the same controller to track substrate volumetric water content — providing the substrate moisture data needed for manual or semi-automated crop steering dry-back management. Push alerts are sent to the TrolMaster smartphone app whenever monitored values exceed user-defined setpoints.

All controller-to-device wiring can span up to 1,000 ft / 300 m, making the NFS-1 practical for large single-structure facilities without requiring secondary control nodes. The DIN-bracket mount ships with the unit for clean wall installation, and firmware updates are delivered via MicroSD card (32 GB or smaller).

How It Fits a Commercial Build

The NFS-1 is the entry-level Aqua-X controller and the right starting point for facilities that need multi-zone automation without the expanded sensor capacity of the NFS-2 (Aqua-X Pro) or the crop-steering automation and 7" touchscreen of the NFS-3 (Aqua-X Plus). It handles the core use case — schedule-driven zone irrigation with nutrient monitoring and mobile oversight — cleanly and without over-engineering the system for smaller or mid-scale canopies.

Because the platform is modular, operators can start with the NFS-1 kit (controller, one WD-1 water detector, touch spot, and 12V power adapter) and expand outputs, water detectors, and sensors as canopy grows. The system's 30-output ceiling and expandable water detector network (up to 30 WD-1 units) give meaningful headroom before operators need to step up to a higher-tier controller. HSC supplies the full TrolMaster Aqua-X accessory line — control boards, sensor boards, substrate sensors, and additional detectors — so the full system can be specified and sourced through a single account.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the NFS-1, NFS-2, and NFS-3?

The NFS-1 (Aqua-X) is TrolMaster's entry-level irrigation controller — up to 30 outputs, pH/EC/temp monitoring, and up to 8 substrate moisture sensors. The NFS-2 (Aqua-X Pro) adds multi-sensor monitoring (up to 50 sensors), optional flow-meter integration, pump-linking for multi-area control, and multi-week crop scheduling. The NFS-3 (Aqua-X Plus) adds a 7" touchscreen, expanded capacity of up to 240 total devices, automated crop-steering irrigation triggers, and up to 25 individual sensors. If you are running a single facility with up to 30 zones and need reliable schedule-based control with nutrient monitoring, the NFS-1 is the right fit. Contact HSC to spec the right tier for your build.

Can the NFS-1 trigger irrigation based on substrate moisture, not just time?

The NFS-1 supports connection of up to 8 Water Content Sensors (WCS-1), which lets operators monitor substrate volumetric water content in real time. Manual crop steering decisions (adjusting schedules based on WCS readings) are supported. Fully automated WCS-triggered irrigation events — where the controller fires a zone when moisture drops below a set threshold without operator input — is a feature more fully developed in the NFS-2 and NFS-3. For automated dry-back management, step up to the Aqua-X Pro or Plus.

What does the included water detector (WD-1) actually do?

The WD-1 serves two functions: it detects standing water (leak alerting) and confirms that an irrigation event successfully delivered water to the target zone. If a drip emitter clogs or a valve fails to open, the WD-1 flags the missed event and pushes an alert through the TrolMaster app. Up to 30 WD-1 units can be connected to one NFS-1 — one per zone is the standard approach in commercial builds.

Does the NFS-1 require a dedicated internet connection in the grow room?

Internet connectivity is required to use the TrolMaster smartphone app for remote monitoring and control. The NFS-1 connects via a standard CAT5 Ethernet cable to a router. Land-based broadband and cellular (4G/LTE) routers are compatible. HughesNet and Viasat satellite internet are not compatible with TrolMaster controllers. The controller will operate on local schedules without internet, but app-based alerts and remote access require connectivity.

Can I add outputs and sensors after initial installation?

Yes. The Aqua-X platform is modular by design. You can add OA6-24 (24V solenoid) boards, OA6-110 (120V pump) boards, DSP-1 timer stations, WD-1 water detectors, WCS-1 moisture sensors, and the AMP-2 sensor board after initial deployment — up to the per-set maximums. HSC supplies the full Aqua-X accessory ecosystem, so you can source expansion modules through the same account as your initial controller.
