Yet the default response to pests and pathogens is still a spray bottle — reactive, residue-prone, and increasingly at odds with compliance testing and consumer expectations. Why ‘Spray and Pray’ Is the Wrong Default
Reactive spraying has three problems. It is late — by the time you see an outbreak, you are containing damage, not preventing it. It is residual — many products leave traces that can fail compliance panels or turn off discerning buyers. And it is incomplete — a foliar spray does nothing about the spore load living on benches, walls, totes, and in the air. A clean-room model flips the order: control the environment and ambient pathogen load first, and treat as a narrow exception, not a routine.
Layer 1: Environment Is Your First Pesticide
Most of the diseases that scare growers — powdery mildew, botrytis — are climate-driven. Deny them their conditions and you prevent the majority of outbreaks without spraying anything:
- Hold VPD in range so the canopy is neither saturated nor stressed — humid, stagnant air is what mildew and botrytis need.
- Eliminate dead air with airflow that reaches the whole canopy; stagnation is an open invitation.

Layer 2: Continuous Air & Surface Sanitization
Even a well-run room accumulates spores and pathogens on every surface and in the air over a cycle — the reservoir that seeds the next outbreak. This is where continuous sanitization earns its place. Can I really grow without pesticides? Most rooms can dramatically reduce chemical use by leading with environment, sanitation, and prevention, reserving targeted, compliant interventions for the rare escape. Zero-input is hard; chemical-light is very achievable.
